Fort building, Part Two

April 20, 2014 by Lauren 5 Comments

After church, all the Seward Sommerers changed clothes and ventured out to the fort. The weather was just perfect – warm, but a little overcast and not too hot. Happiest of all of us was Chapin, the dog. Once we were well into the non-populated areas, he was off-leash and into any mud or water he could find.

chapin

How do dogs not get sore feet? He was leaping about on all these sticks and burrs and looked happy as a clam.

The Other Sommerers took one look at the structure and got right to work. First up: building the walls higher, then putting some supports for the ridge beam.

establishing pillars

That was a little tricky because we had to try and lock it all together using just this really, really rotten wood. Luckily, Sommerers are hard-headed and persevere. (I am a transplant, though, so I just document.)

Walls were woven and roof sticks were added. There were a few injuries during the building. Lloyd cut his finger; I tried using a piece of rotten wood as a hammer to drive a post in, but it broke apart and sent shrapnel; Sam stomped a log apart and sacrificed his ankle for the cause.

All in all, a very fine way to spend the after-Easter hours. (Except for the injuries. We could have done without those.)

Next time you can pack the spaces with mud and put thatch on the roof, and it’ll be just like the houses they lived in on Little House on the Prairie.

Yes, it did – but this place needs some upgrades. It’s a bit drafty, for one. 🙂

Besides everything else involved in restoring the “cabin”, is there a plan for the future to maintain it and set landmines for any intruders? I really love the last picture with everyone’s “smiles of accomplishment”. I knew Jesus was with you and provided a couple injuries to keep everyone humble. He is Risen, Alleluia!! Got bless your entire Easter Season. We did miss your at our eclectic gathering and really appreciated the arrival of the Sommerer Easter Egg Hunters!!!!!
