I’ve taken to writing these in the mornings, when I am a bit fresher and not so tired, but it does make it tricky to get to work on time.
Where were we last? July 1? Ok. On Friday, July 2nd, Lloyd rode down to his family reunion with Cousin Sam and family, since they were leaving in the morning and I was going to be at work until at least 1:30. (It was difficult finding a sub.) I finally got out of Seward around 2, and then encountered a fair amount of holiday travelers, so my trip to Heit’s Point was loooong.
I arrived after supper (Lloyd made me a plate), and there were a fair amount of people already sitting around and visiting. I hung out for a while and visited, then went to the bunkhouse to set up the beds, then back down to the pavilion where everyone gathers to visit a little more and watch some home movies on the projector. (Lloyd and Sam set up some AV equipment.) Lloyd’s big family tree poster was out, too. People were reading it and making notes all over it. I turned in before 11:00 because, well – I can.
The next morning I sneaked in a council fire, then went down to the pavilion for breakfast. Lloyd said he didn’t feel well, but I figured he was hung over. As it turns out, he was not. He was legitimately sick with stomach troubles and a fever. He spent the whole day in bed, and I thought for sure we were going live in Missouri from then on.
Early Sunday morning, he finally threw up and his fever broke. He wanted to go home, so we packed everything up and drove to Seward. We arrived to our wonderful company – the Peperkorns – and Lloyd went straight to bed. We watched the parade as usual (sans Lloyd), with lots of singing and yelling, then ate a picnic supper and visited. We were going to watch the fireworks, but some of Todd and Kathryn’s kids are uncomfortable with the big booms of fireworks, and since Seward is like a war zone on the Fourth, we worked on coming up with more beds inside instead of going to see them. (You can see PLENTY of fireworks from our front yard. People all around are blowing up their money.)
Monday morning, the Peperkorns were up and gone by six, and the boys and I just sat around to recover. I am back at work today, so I hope they feel well and rested today.
Happy Tuesday, y’all!
