I’m going out on a limb here by saying that I’m going to try walking to work every day – at least until the weather becomes beastly hot. Of course, writing it down means that I’ll only actually walk twice, but maybe you guys could keep me honest. “Did you walk to work today, Lauren?” (Of course I’ll lie if I drive – I’m like that.)
My summer hours are changing, and starting tomorrow I go in at 6:30. I’ve been training for this the past week and a half by setting my alarm five minutes earlier each day, and it seems to be working. The trouble is that I’ve had this wonderful luxury of time in the morning – heck, I’ve been able to put a load in the washer and move it to the dryer before I left the house! No more of that. (Unless I get up at 4:30 like Brad. Crazy man.)
Brad says
Did you walk to work today, Lauren?
Brad says
I didn’t write about my brief stint at the gym for the same reason. If I tell people, I won’t do it. What’s that about?
Lloyd says
I don’t write about my many physical accomplishments because I don’t want the rest of you to feel bad. You’re welcome.
Deanne says
Get a pedometer, just a simple one, and don’t worry about measuring your stride. Then aim for 10,000 steps per day. That will help you stay motivated for your walk to work.
Good luck.
Peggy says
Don’t worry about measuring your stride??? How do you even do that?
Way to go Lauren!! And I won’t ask if you’ve walked … I’ll just ask if it was beastly hot today?
Deanne says
There are directions that come with the pedometer that are so complicated, that if you think you have to measure your stride before using the pedometer, you’ll never use the thing.
I think you mark out a certain length path, start walking before the start line and keep walking after the end line and then divide by the number of strides. I never did it, but I found it very stimulating to wear the pedometer just for the number of steps.

I walked from my classroom to the upper school building this morning to pay for tickets to the athletic banquet. Does that count at all since the word “athletic” was involved?
BTW -- my wrists are in excellent shape from all the grading I do.
Deanne says
Of course it counts! Just saying the word “athletic” counts, silly. Oh, and don’t downplay strong writst, either. Great prevention for carpal tunnel syndrome!
Deanne says
Think of all the gas you’ll save…
And then you can buy this fancy rain suit for rainy days: http://www.ppprainwear.com/images/but_womens_rainwear2.gif
Lauren says
You’re joking, right? I don’t think anybody is ever going to click on a link again! Too much fear, too much distrust.
To answer everyone, yes -- I walked. It was wicked early (6:15) and I was a little late to work because my neighbor’s garbage can got knocked over in the night and I picked up her garbage. That’s right -- good Samaritan AND healthy walker.
Karla says
There’s nothing better than a healthy walker with dirty hands.
Lauren says
Ha! I thought about that the whole way to work. (I washed my hands right away in HOT water!!)
