What’s all the hoopla about?

July 22, 2009 by Lauren 21 Comments

*snicker*

When we were at Heit’s Point, Lloyd’s first-cousin-once-removed had a super-cool hula hoop that was filled with water. (You can see Lloyd’s cousin Jane using it in the Flickr set.) It was heavy, and was slow to …. hula? Is that the verb? Anyway, Meredith said she used it a few minutes every day and since her body looks like a Greek goddess, I thought it would be nice to give one a shot. Plus, I’ve had a spot on my spine for a while that feels like it might give out someday, so this is good for strengthening my core muscles, if I have any.

I looked around online and found some water ones, but they seemed like they would be a pain to ship. Luckily there was a company that sold a heavy (non-water-filled) one in sections that you assemble yourself. Clever monkeys.

It’s three pounds once assembled, and this thing comes with all kinds of warnings. Apparently I’m only supposed to use it one to three minutes per day or I’ll be covered with bruises. I can’t help it, though – hula hooping might be the only sort-of sport that I’m good at.

Thumbs up for health!

Do not taunt me.

I still haven’t caved to the Bakery, and fortunately it’s closed when I’m headed home. I might weaken tomorrow, though, if we stop by while Gettin’ Stuff Dun.

Sunlight on a bakery. Must be heaven.

What’s on your To Do list this weekend?

Walkin’

May 20, 2008 by Lauren 12 Comments

Downtown Seward - charming in the morning.

I’m going out on a limb here by saying that I’m going to try walking to work every day – at least until the weather becomes beastly hot. Of course, writing it down means that I’ll only actually walk twice, but maybe you guys could keep me honest. “Did you walk to work today, Lauren?” (Of course I’ll lie if I drive – I’m like that.)

My summer hours are changing, and starting tomorrow I go in at 6:30. I’ve been training for this the past week and a half by setting my alarm five minutes earlier each day, and it seems to be working. The trouble is that I’ve had this wonderful luxury of time in the morning – heck, I’ve been able to put a load in the washer and move it to the dryer before I left the house! No more of that. (Unless I get up at 4:30 like Brad. Crazy man.)

Funny what a little guilt can do…

January 8, 2007 by Lauren 6 Comments

So, SOMEone wants to burn forty calories of his own, I see. Oh, it is so wearisome having everyone try to copy me, be more like me, emulate me, imitate me, impersonate …..er, sorry. Just found the thesaurus function on Microsoft Word.

Anyway, Lloyd finally replaced the D batteries in his bike (without which it will not function), sighed, and said, “One less excuse”. Hooray for Lloyd! He’s pedaling to health!

Guilty as charged! Get it? New batteries? CHARGED?? Get it?

(By the way, Sam – you lurker, post a comment or you’ll lose your viewing privileges.)

Puttin’ in the time

January 7, 2007 by Lauren 6 Comments

‘Way back in September (August?) we spent money on exercise equipment – a treadmill for me and a stationary bike for Lloyd.  As with everything in life, we used it faithfully for about a month, then they were just conversation pieces in the living room.  (That’s right, the living room. Smack dab in the central hub.  If we had put them in the basement or anywhere else, they wouldn’t have been used two days in a row.)  Anyway, I have lowered my goal substantially.  I used to walk for 30 minutes, so I decided that 10 would be just grand.  10 minutes a day?  Any idiot can do that.  Tonight I increased my productivity by 10%!!  I tried to take a picture at 11 minutes, but I kept goofing up.  Ah, I feel healthier already.

Who burned almost 40 calories? Why, I think _I_ did!
