Something you should know about cat hairs

There are a lot of things I need to tell you before I tell my non-interesting story.

1) I wear Smartwool no-show socks. I have a couple pair that I rotate through. I wash them in the sink at night and leave them by the fan to dry.

2) Because of 1), there are sometimes cat hairs stuck to my socks.

3) Smartwool no-show socks have a strip of silicone on the heel to keep your socks from sliding into your shoes.

4) Sometimes cat hairs get stuck in people’s feet.

There. You see where this is going, right?

On Saturday, my right heel felt a little funny walking around St. Paul’s campus. It wasn’t a big deal – just mildly annoying. As the day wore on, it became more noticeable. In the late afternoon, Rachel and I skipped out to go to a giant Western store and as we wandered around, it was hurting quite a bit. I was certain that I was getting a blister from that silicone and tried to tough it out, but then I gave in. I sat down to take off my sock so I could turn it inside-out so the silicone wouldn’t rub. I took off my sock and….

there was a cat hair stuck in my heel.

But wait! There’s more!

Normally when there is a cat hair stuck in my foot (this has happened more often than you’d think), it’s just sticking out like a porcupine quill, about 1/32 inches deep.

This hair? It had worked its way under my skin an inch. One. Inch. I am not lying. It’s wasn’t in my flesh a whole inch, it was right underneath the skin, like some kind of skin worm. I yanked it out but I was so sad I didn’t holler to Rachel to come see it first. She only got to see the thin red line it left behind.

Gross, huh? At least there was a tiny bit of excitement?

How interesting. I don’t think I’ve ever had a cat hair stuck in my foot. Of course, I don’t have much opportunity for such things, but still…
