Train Ride – with family!

July 12, 2012

Today was a good day. It started at midnight when Lloyd and Brad gave me a ride to the new completely-unfindable Amtrak station in Lincoln. I am so glad that someone at my meeting Tuesday night gave me the heads-up that there even was a new station, or I would have been in trouble. At one point I thought we were in such a bad neighborhood we were going to get murdered.

Being lost didn’t make us too late, since the train was an hour behind schedule. Once on, I got settled in for the night, but forgot that in addition to the footrest that they have for the coach seats, there is also a leg rest that pops out to support your calves. That makes a bit of a difference in comfort. It wasn’t a big deal, though, since I had room to stretch out over two seats and slept just fine.

I met up with my sister and her boys in Denver. It was so great! We talked and had snacks and lunch and it was wonderfully relaxing. Jacob understood how to make the legrest work.

Exciting story: While I was sleeping, there was a robbery on the train! A young lady was drunk and broke into the club car snack/beverage section to steal beer and wine. She apparently made a big mess, but worst of all – she broke the coffee machine! I think all the passengers wanted to harm her strictly for that. Once everyone heard about her caper, we all said the same thing – “When you rob a train, where do you think you’re going to go? You’re on a train.” She was picked up in Denver and I felt badly for her. A night of stupidity ruined our trip and her life. Dumb kid.

I was embarrassed for her, but I couldn't stop watching.

Where is the new station in Lincoln? Is there such a thing as a bad neighborhood in Lincoln? That drinking on trains is a bad scene. No place to go so they drink to pass the time, that’s what makes the sleepers so nice, and they have coffee machines just for your car 🙂 Glad you had a safe transport, enjoy the mountains.

Well, it was sort of a warehouse-district turned into a construction zone in and out of a soon to be abandoned train yard. It looked plenty creepy at night.

The train was an hour late? I was just telling my parents yesterday how nervous I was that we were cutting it so close. I like to be at the airport a LONG time before my flight. We were arriving at the train station ten minutes before midnight!

I’m glad you made it safely and with little incident.

I love the train too! Roomier than a car or an airplane and you don’t have to take off your shoes in security because there is no security. Hence the great train robbery that you experienced, Lauren.

      Ha! So true!

I was on it once and they took some drunk off and left him in a town not his destination out in Utah somewhere in the night! He was very obnoxious and was disrupting everyone, made it easier for me to ask for and acquire a sleeping car at a great deal 🙂
