I treated myself today to a day of shopping. I had some things I needed to buy (birthday crowns and a pair of capris) but then spent lots and lots and lots of time just looking around. It was splendid! I took my time looking at dumb stuff and useful stuff, but not buying anything. Ahhhhh…..
However, I did have a minor quest.
I went to the antique store to look for a Perfection kerosene/oil heater. I had come across some video for some reason and was charmed by the idea. The old models work basically like an oil lamp – they just have much bigger wicks. You can burn them indoors (a drafty house like ours should be just fine), and unlike installing a pellet or wood stove, having one would satisfy my need for fire without having to modify the house.
Anyway, when I walked in the antique store I decided that I would spend $100 on a heater if they had one. I walked up and down every aisle and in the very last one – there it was! It was filled with Christmas lights but I yanked those out and bought it as fast as possible. I was singing the whole way home!
Now, these things are antiques, so I knew there was the possibility this would need lots of work.
Um, yes.
Aside from the non-high-temperature-paint that needs to be removed, that lovely brown color is rust. Lots and lots and lots of rust.
I knew that the guts would need overhauling, and that this tank had a couple of holes in the bottom, but I figured they could be soldered/welded and all would be fine. What I didn’t realize is that it is missing a vital piece (flame spreader) and that every part on this that should turn/twist is rusted solid. I have soaked it in oil, but I’m also scouting ebay for some gut options.
No matter. Tonight I filled it with tea lights and basked in the glow of fire. FIRE!!!
Still a great day!

It is a fine fire indeed.

That seems like too much work for me, but I guess we all have our hobbies, and yours is definitely fire 🙂

I meant to say “too much work to me”. I do not intend to do any work on your heater 🙂

(Honestly, neither do I.) 🙂
Thanks, Rachel!

I found one of those when I was a kid. Bet it had all the parts. Wish you had it.

Tea lights! Much cheaper than a fireplace.
