We had an outdoor VBS closing service and picnic/potluck on Sunday. Everyone who was invited to the potluck was asked to bring a main dish and a side dish, which – as you can imagine – threw me into a bit of a panic. Cooking is not my strong suit. I made strawberry pretzel salad (that wilted in the heat) and cooked some frozen meatballs and a jar of spaghetti sauce in a crock pot and called it good. (Both dishes were made using our prototype ‘summer kitchen’. More about that another day.)
Anyway, it was a good, blessedly short service. We brought lawn chairs or blankets, used gobs of sunscreen and bug spray, sang our songs and I sweated through my VBS shirt one last time. It was sooooooo hot, but at least it was sunny and not raining. I vote for doing it again next year.
Afterward, I had a little meeting to attend, and then after that….. naps. Blessed, blessed naps.

“cooking is not my strong suit”?
Lauren says
You know that. Lots of substitutions and weird results? Not for public consumption.
Brad says
Ah… I see. But you shouldn’t think of it as a negative. You are avant garde. You are a pioneer. Who invented pies in jars? Who didn’t make a million dollars on that idea? See? You’re just like an artist who lives in poverty and obscurity, but after they die they become famous and lots of people make money off of them.

I had some of your strawberry salad before it melted. It was delicious!
These pot lucks also make me panic. Therefore I also bought some meatballs and threw sauce on them. 🙂 I decided last summer to choose a Salad of the Summer — one that is easy and delicious — and take it to every pot luck. Then I don’t have to think about it.

It hasn’t been hot here. Some people are complaining about it, but I think they’re crazy! I am loving it….er, was loving it. We’re going to be getting your stupid heat this week.
And I agree with Brad, you are a pioneer in the food world. You should have a show!
