I have a 3-year-old boy in my room this summer who is not a good napper. He wasn’t a good napper in the toddler room, either. He either wiggles and talks on his cot the whole time, or he does sleep, but has night terrors. (Night terrors are where you are near-screaming/sobbing uncontrollably while you are asleep, but you can’t wake up. Fun times.) I have ‘successfully’ helped him sleep a couple of times lately, but as I rubbed his back I looked at his sheet.
The repeating blocky letters spelled ‘MOUSE’ and I could see Mickey’s head, but I kept trying to figure out what the other line was. SKAMEE? KAMEES? AMEESK? MEESKA? After looking too long I would get a headache and give up.
Today I googled it. Apparently it is from the new Mickey Mouse Club and is part of an incantation that brings Mickey to life or something: “Meeska Mooska”. More interestingly, some dude on Answers.com said this: “My wife is Russian, and when she heard it (Meeska Mooska) she immediately said that it was “Mickey Mouse” in Russian. Misha (meesha) is the English equivalent of Michael, and Mishka ( meeshka) is a nickname like Mike or Mickey. Mushka is close to mouse in Russian.
Fascinating, eh?
I know. Not really.

Ha! I like the toes in your banner picture.
Karla says
That’s what makes the clubhouse appear!
Beth says
You’ll need to say this in your head in Mickey’s voice…
“C’mon everybody, let’s make the clubhouse appear! Say it with me! MEESKA, MOOSKA, MICKEY, MOUSE!”
And then the music starts…
Brad says
So he says his name in Russian on the American TV show? Is it some sort of commie plot to indoctrinate our young people?
Brad says
Wait… they aren’t commies any more, right? Is it some sort of federal semi-presidential republic plot?
Lloyd says
You’ve got to feel sorry for them, going to whatever you call the thing worse than communism.
Mom says
Poor little guy but does everyone wake up when night terrors start?
Sue G says
When I was a kid I was told it was an Italian swear word.
No information on internet search except Mickey Mouse.
Still don’t know origin or meaning.
