As the new CDC is built, I really want my class to understand what’s going on. They all know generally that there is a big hole in the ground, but that’s about it. The group that I really had involved in the ‘planning’ of the building? They are first graders now. I’ve been slowly getting this year’s class on board by showing them some photos, and today we took a walk to see the actual job site.
It sounds easy, but to walk those ten blocks, it takes us nearly half an hour. I’m not even joking. This is not a trip we will make often, and one of my little short-legged girls knew that a looooong trip was coming, so I told her I would have a surprise snack when we arrived. That lifted her spirits! When I busted out the Skittles as we rested in the narthex, all was sunshine and roses.

Hehe… Your short-legged girl reminds me of something that happened yesterday:
One of the first graders cries when he hears loud noises, which has happened a few times in music class already. Yesterday we were dancing the Hokey Pokey, and this particular version of the song from YouTube had a “put your loud voice in” verse. I told him it was coming, and told him to cover his ears. He was okay for the first two seconds, then took his hands off his ears and started crying. Dang. I thought I’d dodged the bullet.
Gretchen says
If only you had Skittles. That poor little guy could have stuck them in his ears (since using his hands was ineffective.)
Kristi says
Good choice with Skittles. M&Ms get way sticky for the little people. If I had been along, I would have requested Snickers.
