Several weeks ago, my siblings tossed around ideas for things we might do for the birthday weekend. We wondered about singing some of the bedtime prayers from our childhood – perhaps in harmony. We knew we would get teary.
Well, like many of the Hofman sibling ideas, nothing came of it. We didn’t practice or anything.
As it turns out, my brother Mark sings, “Now the light has gone away” with his son, Matthew, at night! He was talking to him on the phone and asked if we all wanted to sing prayers.
(Now the light has gone away,
Savior, listen while I pray,
asking thee to watch and keep,
and to grant me quiet sleep.
Jesus, Savior, wash away
all that has gone wrong today.
Help me evermore to be
good and gentle more like thee.)
Whoa! Here we go! We all gathered around the phone and slowly sang, with little stabs at separate parts. We finished, I braced for tears, and Mark asked Matthew, “What did you think?”
Matthew replied, “….. you sounded like robots.”
Bwaaahhaaahaaaa! No tears now! Mark said, “That’s because we were singing in harmony.”
Matthew replied, “……. so, you’re a choir of robots.”
Best band name ever. When we took a ride on the mesa later, we shot our album cover:

Ha! I love it!
Our children have always sung that bedtime prayer. AND my family members sing it in harmony. It’s quite difficult not to get teary-eyed.

I don’t know where the question marks came from. Supposed to be happy faces.

At my last school, the second verse of that song was the end-of-school-day prayer that all the younger grades used. I didn’t know it was a song.
