I made Lloyd go to Omaha on Saturday. I needed stuff for school and had a Secret Quest, as well.
The Secret Quest involved going to Northern Tool, which is kind of a step up from Harbor Freight. (Lloyd says I have that analogy super-wrong. He says, “Northern Tool is to Harbor Freight as Macy’s is to Dollar Tree.”) Whatever. I spent a looooong time looking at all the stuff, but what I was after was a Kindling Cracker (click the link), which is only sold there.
The Kindling Cracker was invented by a 13-year-old girl for a science project. I know! It is basically a reverse axe. It’s one piece of cast iron that includes a base that you can attach to something, a collar to help hold the wood, and a blade that faces up. You set a log on the blade, smash it with a little sledgehammer, and BOOM – kindling.
It is So. Much. Fun. I only got to work with it at night, because I kept tripping over the mess on the dark patio, so I only have a basketful right now.
I think I might have a Bonus Council Fire before church tomorrow.
I was waffling about it because of the price ($80), and was explaining my angst to Lloyd. “I don’t really need it – I have an axe. I could just figure out how to prop it up….”
“Yehup,” Lloyd said, grabbing the box and walking away. “You had me at ‘prop up my axe’.”
I cackled out loud! He doesn’t trust me at all.

That’s super cool! And the end of your story made me laugh out loud. I was picturing you “Laurening” an axe. Yikes!

I love the write-up. And it’s made in Australia! Super cool!
Also, good call, Lloyd.

Last night we noticed that we got a Northern Tool in a long empty building. I’m looking forward to exploring all that they have!!
