We had string cheese sticks for snack yesterday. The children eat them in their own ways – some pulling the strings off and eating them, some leaving them attached at one end and saying it’s an octopus. One boy (we’ll call him Mike) took a bite out near an end and looked at it for a while.

Mike: It looks like a tool.
Me: What kind of tool?
Mike: A tool that cuts off skin.
Me: [struggling to both 1) see it as a scalpel and 2) wonder why he knows about those] ………. a ….. razor?
Mike: No. Fruit skin.
[Gears clicking in my head ]
Me: A peeler?
Mike: Yeah.
[Whew.]
