I caught a cold on Lloyd’s birthday, so I went to bed at 8. I like to think that I gave him the gift of silence so he could read his book in peace. I’m thoughtful like that.
Side note: I need to buy more cold medicine.

Happy Birthday, Lloyd! I hope that you have a splendid day at school, considering you have an early out. He likes to celebrate ‘Happy My Birthday’ by handing out candy throughout the halls. This year we found some bags of clearance assorted Mexican candy and I’m kicking myself for not getting a picture of it. Maybe the internet can help….
Yes! Ricofiesta candies! I hope they are a huge hit! Or at least a funny hit……

Happy Birthday to Mrs. Royuk!!
This terrible photo is just a reminder for me in case we ever decide to sell the truck. It is a reminder that when the weather is very cold, the seat belt doesn’t stayed latched. So, Lauren Of The Future, remember that when it is cold outside, this thing is a death trap.

Normally, I don’t really want people to make any kind of deal out of my birthday, but this year, I absolutely do not want anybody expressing birthday wishes to me without my announcing it first. Hence, the shirt. The terrible homemade shirt!
But wait, there’s more. I have a count-along on the back so we can do some math during the day. (Note how it starts with 0. Some guy told me that’s how you should approach counting with young children. Long story for another time.)
I also have some ‘Happy My Birthday’ trinkets for my co-workers. It’s a nice pen, with a warning that I’ll probably walk off with that pen at some point. I’m really a terrible person.
To top it all off, tonight is our staff get-together, so I’m having fajitas! Woo-hoo! Happy Birthday to me!

So, this week Lloyd and I are turning fifty, so we had a shin-dig!
Before we planned it, I had wondered if there could be some sort of clever tie-in for such a momentous time, and as it turns out, the Roman numeral for ‘50’ is ‘L’! (I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but our names both start with L.) Lloyd wanted to have people over to the house, but I am mortified at how awful my super-comfortable living room furniture is. We wound up renting a loft in Seward (see how it starts with ‘L’?) owned by a local winery. The space was gorgeous and I couldn’t get over it.
Early Saturday morning, we ran our first batch of things to the loft, then went with Sam to Lincoln for a cheese and bread run. (The theme of the party was ‘Weird Cheese”.)
Above you’ll see the kitchen, littered with some of the things from our home. Below, you’ll see the seating area. What you cannot see is my total desire to reside there permanently. I joked that we just need to do this at home: rip off the drywall to get to the exposed brick. (I know it’s not as funny as I think it is, but I had to type it.)
Lloyd and I did some more setting up in the afternoon, but then I had to leave to get ready for the CDC’s Advent service. I left some detailed notes for Lloyd to follow. I had specific thoughts about where things should go.
Here’s a gander at just SOME of the cheese we had. By the way, we had way too much cheese. If something’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing.
I didn’t need to worry about leaving directions. While I was at church, Sam and Beth came to help Lloyd set up, and they did a bang-job!
Be perfect! Cheese, fruit, sausages, crackers, bread, butter, jams, wine, and cute people.
The island was so huge, it was hard to get a picture of everything.
I forgot to mention that Lloyd brought ALL the alcohol in our house. He expressly said that he wanted there to be a ton of alcohol there. Not that we were going to drink it all, he just wanted a bunch of bottles. I think he was successful!
I tried getting a panorama photo, but it looks like the room is longer and darker than it was. Still cool. We had lots of people and lots of fun. I am so thankful for everyone who was there!
Lloyd and I stayed the night, and then we had most of the crew come back for a breakfast party on Sunday morning. (Everyone was going to the school service at 5 p.m.) We cooked up some eggs to eat with leftover bread and cheese and it was delightful!
For nearly every event in my life, I calculate how many hours until it will be over. “In twelve hours this will all be over” – that kind of thing. This was one event that I was quite wistful to have end. Many thanks to all the people who made it fun!

So, we ordered some new plates for school a while back. The old ones were at least 20 years old and when we had blueberries, it took a round of Oxyclean to remove the stains, and even then, they weren’t ‘clean’ then. The new ones are nice and smooth, but are quite deep.
A month or so ago I told our cook that I thought a pull-out shelf would make plate management easier. I had even gone so far as to buy a couple of drawer glides so I could make the shelf. Wednesday, I decided to just do it. I found a piece of old cabinet in the basement that would do just dandy and set to work!
But….. the glided had to be taken apart, and that was difficult. The two pieces had to be lined up correctly, though they were attached separately. Erm……
When it was time to attach the two shelves (not in the cabinet, of course), things went badly. I tried forcing the fit and bent the innards of one of the slides. I wisely decided to chuck the whole things and went about my merry way.
Embrace the failures! 🙂
