When Lloyd and I were visiting Dad over Thanksgiving, he was telling Jacob a story about how his own father would make toys for them when they lived in Brazil. I was familiar with how Granddaddy had made a wooden truck and a wooden train for the kids. The train was made over three years – first the locomotive, then the passenger car, then the caboose. So sweet.
But then Dad said something very interesting. Granddaddy asked someone with a lathe to spin a piece of wood into several grooved sections, so if he ever needed to cut out some wheels, they were ready to go. Apparently he didn’t need any more wheels, and guess where that piece of wood wound up?
It had been in my parents’ house this whole time, turned into a table. Who knew?
Now, THAT is clever!

That is sooo clever! Now. Put a piece of tape with your name on it on the bottom of this beautiful piece.

Who knew?!?!??
I guess dad knew. And Granddad and Grandmother. Certain not me. Thanks for resharing this story.

That’s the kind of story they tell on Antiques Roadshow! And then the appraiser says: “I would value that around 1200 to 1500 pounds.” And then the person says in a reserved British accent: “Oh my. I certainly didn’t expect that.”
I’ve been watching a lot of British Antiques Roadshow lately.
