Last summer, when we were talking about maybe getting new toilets, Brad said that ‘toilet technology has really advanced in the past several years’. I’m not gonna lie, I thought he was kidding. I mean, it’s water in a tank that goes into a bowl – how much could it have changed ?
Well, I was super wrong. Our old toilets were like all normal toilets where the water from the tank gets into the bowl through several holes around the underside of the rim. Not this. This is a Toto Drake, and it has two giant holes instead of all the little ones.

The water just blasts out of those holes into a vortex, and the flush is over within three seconds. It’s fascinating, and kind of terrifying.
The toilets themselves are quite pretty, but they’re tall toilets. When Lloyd was ordering them I said I didn’t care, but I didn’t realize they’d be quite so tall. I feel like a preschooler when I sit on one – dangling legs and all.

Yay! Thank you for the follow-up. I am fascinated by the design differences. I got some new toilets in Baltimore that had the “vortex” type flush.
Those are pretty toilets. Good choice.
These are the Toto Drake 1 toilets. They are 1.6 liter units. The Toto Drake 2 are 1.28 liter, so they are legal in California. I wanted to get the Drake 2, but they were quite a bit more expensive. After much research, I completely ignored the Toto toilets because, while they were the best, they were also by far the most expensive. As Lauren said, Lowes price matching Amazon was the reason we could afford them.
