Lloyd and I were married on August 22, 1992 – right before school/ student teaching began. It was perfect timing, since it was right before school and all our friends would be back in Seward for the wedding. It was stupid timing as far as being teachers goes, though, because we’ve always been wiped out during that time of year. For almost every anniversary, if there was time to celebrate, we would rent a video and eat Chinese food.
On our tenth anniversary, however, I suggested that we should do something special. Perhaps a little trip, or at least some gesture to show that we had lasted a decade. “How about getting our rings engraved?” I said, thinking that we could put in a Bible verse or the date. “Yeah. How ’bout with hash marks?” replied Lloyd. After a moment of silence I burst out in laughter. Perfect!!! Like marking time served, eh? So we went into a very nice jewelry store in Lincoln and asked for the marks. We have been back each August since, with different responses – depending on who’s working the desk. Sometimes we’re charged, sometimes not. Last year one of my CDC kid’s mom worked there, so she provided transportation (of the rings) to and from the store, (no charge, of course). This year we get a slash instead of a hash, so it’s very exciting. I’m the cheapest date ever. Here are the rings before this year’s engraving:
And here they are – fresh from the engraver! Fifteen marks!
And, they’re so beautiful and shiny!
Happy Anniversary. Happy third slash.
Now that’s FUNNY right thar’!
Happy Anniversary to you both.
Oh my gosh, that’s perfect! You guys always crack me up! (That’s the same jeweler that I got Arron’s ring from.)
HAPPY FIFTEENTH! (Don’t how to make hash marks with slashes through them, so you’ll have to accept them written out.)
You should get tattoos for the “zero” and “five” anniversaries! At least, that’s what I hear is proper.
Oh, we have….. we have.
This year, oddly enough, one of the parents of one of my students worked at Sartor Hamann. She thought it was cute too.
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY you couple of clowns!! That’s great!
But it looks to me like the smaller band will only hold about 50 slashes … then what?
(could you post some wedding pictures?) Any one???
Happy Anniversary!!! I just love the idea of marking time served on the rings – too funny!
I think it’s great that our friends either (a) like the idea of engraving tally marks or (b) are too polite to say that they think it’s a dumb idea. Thanks guys.
