For my birthday/Christmas, Samith bought Lloyd and I tickets to the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. I was so happy to go, but yet a little nervous. Nearly every time I’ve gone to the Lied Center, I’ve dozed off. It’s not that the shows aren’t amazing – Bo Diddly/ Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me / Stomp – but it’s always in the evening …. in a darkened room…. In a comfortable chair…..
I was pretty sure I’d be ok at this one. I drank lots of caffeine, and besides – they’re funny! They perform all genres of music – country, blues, rock, classics, and some pretty amazing mash-ups. They have been a group for 37 years, and the members change somewhat through the years, so here is a (very old link, not from Friday night) link to my favorite piece. The instrumentalist has previously claimed that “the people are here for serious, classical-type music, like Handel. Handel!”
Lloyd was pleasantly surprised. He thought all the songs were going to be instrumental, serious pieces. I should have given him a heads-up.
The funniest part of the evening wasn’t the performers, though. It was a pt intermission, when the nice gentleman in our row that we passed when we came in late leaned over and said, “Lloyd?” It was Mark, our fearless leader from our Omaha ukulele group from decades ago! What were the chances? We’ll, the chances were pretty good that he’d be in the theater, but right by us? So funny!
