I would gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today…

June 1, 2011 by Lauren 10 Comments

Burger night is back! Burger night is back!

God bless the hamburger fundraiser at our farmers’ market. There is nothing better than knowing that on Wednesday night – dinner is taken care of. (Well, there is something better: The weekly adrenaline rush of re-remembering that it’s happening. “Hmmmmm, what to make for dinner tonight…. Hey! It’s burger night!”)

This time we almost missed out. Lloyd and I were going to meet there (walking from home and work, respectively). He asked me to stop at the bank to get some cash. Once inside the ATM hideout, I discovered that I had several wallet-shaped items in my bag (camera, camera charger, cell phone, iPod case), but no wallet.

NOOOOO!!!!

It was torture – I could see the burgers cooking, but would be denied their inexpensive deliciousness.

Anguished screaming in the foyer would have been videotaped.

Luckily we scraped together the five bucks for dinner. Lesson learned: Hide cash in odd spots. Future you will thank you.

Oh, speaking of farmers’ markets, check out my sister’s booth in Alaska! Mobile Mending with a foot-powered sewing machine!

Candle cookin’

May 29, 2011 by Lauren 11 Comments

…. but certainly not eating.

Well, aside from Lloyd having services at the nursing home today, we successfully stayed in the house.   Eating, napping, and my personal ‘Arrested Development’ marathon on Hulu were the order of the day.

The problem with sitting on a stool that faces the kitchen is that you come up with stupid ideas to try while watching your shows.  You want to melt the ice cubes in your cup faster so you light a candle.  Then you wonder if a candle could boil water. That’s not working so you wonder if a candle could cook an egg.

Spray measuring cup with Pam first.

See where it's starting to cook? That's also where it will scorch later.

Cover with foil to retain heat.

I put it outside for a cat to eat.

I did not eat it.  The foil should have been vented to let the steam out since the top was kinda soggy/not cooked. Plus, I’m not desperate enough to eat an egg cooked by a candle.  But the day may come, and if it does, I’ll make the eggs.

One at a time.

And it will take fifteen minutes.

Per egg.

We have got to get out of the house today.

Saturday Recap

May 28, 2011 by Lauren 6 Comments

Well, it looked like a glorious day full of nothing. I made breakfast, sat around, then thought it was such a gloomy morning I’d like to make a campfire. Trouble was, all my firewood was wet. No problem:

You have to put it on convection or it just steams.

A little while later I was enjoying a crackling fire in a light drizzle, and just as the last sticks were thrown on, the sun burst out and made the whole scenario ridiculous.

After a shower to wash off the smoke, Lloyd and I ran a few errands. One stop was the garden center, where an appreciative tabby cat (sitting in a box of onion sets) accepted my scritching while Lloyd picked his poison.

Literally. He mixed up several batches and dosed the yard.

I took the opportunity to look at the flowers. The columbine are in full bloom. I like them for two reasons:

1) they are the state flower of Colorado
2) they look like dragon heads.

I wish I had a photo of a dragon to make this into a magi picture.

I tried to get a shot of the inside of each ‘trumpet’.

I felt a little indecent taking this picture - like looking up someone's skirt.

Then I saw the chives had blossoms. Marissa, of Food in Jars, has a cool post about making chive blossom vinegar. I’d like to try it, but I noticed my blossoms have tenants.

He's so widdle.

For the record, that is the size I was expecting of Lloyd’s jumping spider. No one could fear this little guy.

Ahhhh.  How was your Saturday?

So check it out.

Hey, some old friends have new websites! Let’s check in on them, shall we?

There’s Gretchen in Germany. We know her from college, and I’m excited to see how her family makes the switch to dressing exclusively in lederhosen and drinking beer all the the time. I’ve been to Germany, so I know that this is true. Let’s visit her!

Next, Kristi has a website! Kristi is another friend from college who has talent pouring out of every pore, which she should really get a doctor to check out. Our musical gal is in Foster, Nebraska (not Australia), and has just started letting us peek into her world. (Foster is wonderfully tiny, but I’ll let her expound on that sometime.)

So, plug these ladies into your bookmarks, folks!

A moment on the lips….

May 9, 2011 by Lauren 8 Comments

…forever in the garbage.

I caved on Sunday and bought the stupidest piece of junk I’ve ever seen.

In the past I have openly raged at the Colgate Wisp. I believe the first time I saw it was at Target and I was with Lloyd or Brad and stood in shock at this tiny disposable toothbrush that comes in a four-pack. Seriously? You can’t just use a toothpick or get a travel toothbrush?

Well, on Sunday after we went to the buffet, my teeth felt like they had grown fur. I dropped off Lloyd and then went to a drugstore to get a small travel toothbrush, but my purse is so tiny, I would never just keep it in there.

So, I stood in the toothbrush aisle and stared at the Wisps.

They mocked me with their tinyness: We’re cute, yes?

I stared some more.

Wisps: “We’re dispooooooooosable! We’ll be on the earth ten times as long as you will! Ha ha ha ha!”

I stared some more and started to seethe.

Wisps: “We’re each one-time use! Ha ha ha! Oh, the glorious, wasteful hedonism of it all!”

I grabbed the four-pack and said through clenched teeth, “That’s where you’re wrong. I will re-use each of you again and again until your bristles look like stalagmites melted by a nuclear bomb.”

Wisps: “NOOOOOOOOOOO!”

Nearby toothpaste: “Can bombs even melt rocks?”

People stress me out.

Good words to chew on for a Friday.

That is all.
