Valentine’s Day report

February 14, 2024 by Lauren Leave a Comment

It was a pretty good day, and I’m proud of my kids. I’ve been doing this holiday with preschoolers for decades, so it’s pretty plug-and-play. They decorate a bag in the days ahead, they sign (not address) their valentines, I tell the parents to NOT bring a class snack (but doo-dads or candy with their valentines is fine). The day of, we make easy, one-page crowns, string beads on a ribbon to make a necklace, and take turns passing out valentines.

My triumph this year was the snack. I had thought about making cookies, but I didn’t have any regular flour in the house. Ugh. One more obstacle. I went to Wal-Mart to find a pre-made plain cookie that I could put frosting on….. and saw the graham crackers.

Perfect! I put the frosting in the bag, snipped a corner and drew a heart and their initial on it. They thought is was The Best Snack Ever.

Now, if only I can remember that for next year…..

(This one was mine, so it wasn’t very pretty.)

The trees

February 13, 2024 by Lauren 1 Comment

Apparently the city is widening Highway 15 through town so that the semis that cruise through will have a bit more room. (Something like that. I found about about it through a Facebook post. I am not a Responsible Citizen.) The first step is to CHOP DOWN TREES along the road. Ugh. That pains my soul.

I knew about Highway 15/6th Street, but when I walked home from work last week, I was on my street – 7th Street – and there were trees chopped down! What?!?!

The man who owns the house was grilling outside, so we talked for a bit. The cross road (Park Avenue) has storm drains below that lead to a ditch just after 8th street. The pipes aren’t big enough to handle big storms and that low area floods during heavy rains. The People In Charge said that Seward can’t widen 6th Street until they figure out the drainage problem. So, Park Avenue is going to get torn out, new giant storm sewer pipes will go in, and then the road will be replaced.

Ugh. The trees…….

Green: Park Avenue The photo didn’t load correctly. 7th Street cuts through Park.

‘Bye, toilets.

February 1, 2024 by Lauren 2 Comments

The toilets are finally out of the house. The snow has melted enough that I could call the garbage company and ask if they would pick them up. They’ll let me know if it’s going to cost anything extra.

Goodbye, toilets. Thank you for your service.

It’s Samith’s fault.

January 30, 2024 by Lauren 3 Comments

Way, way back in ….. 2019? Samith gave me a box of giant match-like fire starters.

Wait.

Never mind.

I already wrote this post when I bought the next box. Good grief. There are no new ideas.

Here’s that post: Fire Starter Safety. I wrote it in January of 2022, so it’s safe to say that a box of these lasts about 2 years.

Well, I ponied up the $14 bucks for new box and did the same thing – removing the match heads so I can sleep at night.

And, yes, I once again burned all the match heads at once. It was SUPER smokey, so I added a couple of sticks to try and activate the secondary-combustion action of the Fire Can.

Almost a new skill

January 29, 2024 by Lauren 2 Comments

The world ran out of eggs during the snowstorms, so when they came back, I went ahead and got what was available – 24 eggs. Good grief. How long is it going to take us to finish those?

I usually like to make a fried egg on my cast iron skillet, but that thing might need to be re-seasoned. I dug out an old little pan that I’ve had for ages, and guess what?

I’ve discovered that I don’t need a spatula to turn it over. (If I’m holding it over the sink.)

(I’m not skilled enough yet to do this at the stove.)

By the way, the clock in the background had a dead battery. It’s not 11:30 at night – it was actually early morning.
