Prototypin’

April 20, 2007 by Lauren 3 Comments

Tools of the trade.... not.

(Sorry for missing Friday. I went to bed early so I could go to work and cook. Lloyd said he would post something but he wound up grading papers instead. That’s good for him, but bad for you, ’cause he’s got a really funny one. Get on his case to post it!)

Next Saturday I’m going to a conference in Columbus to try and convert more people to the power of ukes. We’ll be using barirones, which are more guitar-like. I have three on hand here, and one of our ukulele night guys is going to loan me three. It’s possible for two people to share a ukulele, but it gets kind of boring for the person who has to wait their turn. So, this time – I have prototypes for them! These are 21-inch-long pieces of 1×3 with pieces of bamboo skewers glued on for ‘frets’. I need to get some heavier fishing line for strings. They won’t be in tune at all, but at least it’ll be something to practice on.

unsanded and unsafe!

…and now back to our regularly scheduled season…

April 16, 2007 by Lloyd 5 Comments

It was back in the 70s today after a weeklong foray back in to winter. We had snow last Monday and weather in the 30s-40s for about a week. I survived by going outside as little as possible. Unfortunately I had “afterschool supervision duty” all week, and the other teacher who had duty with me is even worse than I am about not doing something and then sounding all sorry for it later.

...poor little cutting garden...

After school supervision goes from 3:30 until 4:00 and is the longest 30 minutes of the school day. The kids don’t even have to be bad (they seldom are) it’s just that you always have something that you really should be doing during that time.

...nothing like this happens when Brad is around to take care of you...

Did I mention I had a cold? I think I’ve gone and given it to Lauren. Yeah, that’s why I’m posting.

Some fine art!

April 10, 2007 by Lauren 7 Comments

Since we missed Easter due to Lloyd’s illness, it was nice to be able to share the Easter story daily with the preschoolers. To re-tell the story, we use Resurrection Eggs, a wonderful teaching tool that has plastic eggs wtih symbols of Easter inside – a plastic donkey, crown of thorns, a stone, etc.

My kids came up with some pretty great drawings on their own. It’s so neat to see how far they’ve come from their ‘circles with legs’ stage. Here is a sampling of their work:

Just about the best drawings ever.

Josh’s says, “Good Friday when Jesus was whapped.” Reece drew Jesus on the cross, complete with nails and crown of thorns, and Riley has the soldier throwing dice for Jesus’ clothes. Thanks, Resurrection Eggs! Thanks, Jesus!

‘M’ is for Lasagna

April 4, 2007 by Lauren 4 Comments

After each having a pretty bad day, Lloyd and I pigged out on lasagna made in the ultra-cool Baker’s Edge pan.  The noodles fit just right – after snapping off about two inches from each end.  This recipe uses the ‘no-boil-um-first’ method, which didn’t work well the first time I made it back in ought-one.  This time it was much better.  It turns out that you don’t need to worry about turning the corners – they just expand during cooking and fill up the space.

All in all, a good dinner.  Here’s to a better tomorrow! (It’s got to be better – leftover lasagna!)

An 'M' or an upside-down 'W'? You decide.

A River of Darkness

April 3, 2007 by Lauren 12 Comments

(Dang it, I did it again.  Happy YesterTuesbirthdays to Stephannie and Jacob!)

Serpentine goodness

It’s here!  It’s here!  I ordered a brownie pan from Bakers Edge that makes all sides and corners!!!!  I’ve had brownie mix on standby for days, and today the pan finally arrived!!  I know this news won’t excite all you ‘gooey middles’ people, but I love the edges of brownies.   So tough and chewy…mmm….   Unfortunately I was too anxious to get this batch out of the oven, so they turned out a little softer than I would have liked.  (I wanted crunchy!)

They have other recipes, too.  Lloyd’s most excited about doing lasagna (layers stay stacked), and I’m curious to try to roast something – you put the veggies in the bottom and put the roast on the top.  Crazy!

Dry run - get it? 'Dry?' noodles? never mind.

A Night of Mad Fun!

March 31, 2007 by Lloyd 5 Comments

Last night was the second of our annual fun nights. We used to have dances, but when Scott became principal he said we couldn’t have dances (I think he had a bad experience at a middle school dance), so now we have Fun Nights®. When we first started doing them I didn’t want to have to do very much work, so I asked the senior class sponsor if they wanted to do it as a fund raiser. So the seniors do most of the work, and we have a few teachers to chaperone. We run a dance with a couple of Macs running iTunes and a DJ mixer that I bought at a pawn shop. A dodge ball tournament (12 team double elimination this time) A game room in the library with board and card games. Snacks and drinks in the commons. A tattoo parlor (okay, it’s face painting, but don’t tell the kids). And this time we added an arcade. The arcade was a big hit. We projected Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution onto the big 12’x12′ screens. The dance, dodge ball and board games are “free”; everything else costs 1 of the 6 tickets that they get when they come in.

Ah...the days of awkward middle school dances...

Dodge ball, anyone?

It's Road Runners against Death Metal's Rock Sauce!

All gussied up

Mmmmmm....snacks....

Rock it out, man.

Last night was way too much work for me, though. Both our boys’ and girls’ soccer teams had rain delays that moved their games to Friday. So I had to do more work than usual to set stuff up, but I hijacked the chess club and they did most of it. They were surprisingly efficient. I told them to do something that I thought would take 15 minutes and that I figured I’d have to have them redo once because they didn’t do it right, but no dice. They were faster and did a great job. But even with their help, I didn’t get to eat until 11:00 at night when I had a nutritious dinner of Jalapeño poppers, mozzarella sticks and wings.  A good time was had by all.
