So, now that I knew about the glories of CFbtL (Council Fire by the Lake), I was so excited that Lloyd would be home and could drive me there in the dark! (It’s a little weird how much joy this little thing brings me, isn’t it?) Saturday was going to be glorious!
……. and then I got sick. Not super-sick, just not feeling great. I was tired and bleh, so we didn’t go. I spent most of the day asleep, and when I was awake, I was grumpy. I didn’t go to church on Sunday, but I felt less tired in the afternoon. I had heard about a little reservoir south and west of Seward, so I asked Lloyd if we could just go there and sit for a while. No fire, just some snacks and chairs. He just sits and reads during these events, so he was all for it.
The map shows it just south of the Utica exit on I-80.
It was nice. There is one camping spot that was occupied, and it kind of looked like the people there were set up long-term. We walked around a little bit and then settled in. Thankfully, I have a cool set of binoculars (that my Dad gave me) in the car at all times.
Then I found a little kid’s fishing pole that had been abandoned. It was a mess – the line was out and in a big tangle. As it turns out, the line for this style is supposed to go through the actual pole, not through rings on the side (like a normal pole). I was all excited to have Something To Tinker With, and spent a looooong time trying to thread that curly line through a straight tube. Eventually I discovered a secret compartment with a tiny weight to do the job, and got it set up.
It only had a bobber – no hook – so this was perfect for me! I used to fish when I was a kid and loved everything about it……except catching the fish. (That made me a Fish Murderer.) I would hand the fish and pole all off to my Dad or brothers and they would finish the dirty work.
Only having a bobber, though? Perfect! I spent a good long time just casting out and reeling in. It was so relaxing and fun.
I left the pole there in case the kid and his/her family came back for it. I sure was tempted to keep it, though……..
