traffic

This is a nice thing about Nebraska.

March 1, 2012 by Lloyd 11 Comments

See that picture up there? That’s what I see every day on the way home from school. They are building Lincoln’s first 2 lane round-a-bout and the left lane is closed ahead. If you squint, you can just make out the big arrow sign.

Notice what you don’t see in the left lane? Any cars. For about a mile before the lane is actually closed everyone has already queued up in the right lane and are calmly and politely heading home from work. It absolutely amazes me every single day.

Don’t get me wrong, there are things that Nebraska drivers do that drive me crazy too, but they have this down.

And when I see this happen:

They also leave the intersection unblocked.

I knew that he’s going to turn left. He did.

Strange weather afoot

September 13, 2010 by Lloyd 7 Comments

Kathryn Peperkorn, opera star, was flying into Omaha, and Lauren had Grandparent’s Tea at 7:00pm (go ahead, ask her), so I went to pick her up. Coming into Omaha at about 5:00pm the traffic going out was pretty bad. In fact, it was backed up behind an accident for nearly 4 miles at one point. Well, needless to say, I worked hard to find an alternate route.

The alternate route put us back on I-80 in more or less good time. We had avoided all of the traffic. Until the interstate stopped. We spent more or less an hour and a half crawling along (when we were moving at all) until we came up to this:

Okay, that might slow down traffic

Okay, that will stop traffic. No other cars. just a semi turned over in the interstate. Then we passed the second one. This is a photo of the THIRD one. Seriously?

Good grace to blow onto the shoulder

No other evidence of –here we’re  guessing– really, really high winds. Well, except for these guys. They started out on our side of the road.

One of them made it all the way across

From the other direction these cars were being escorted.

Follow me

But we made it home safely.

Mostly safe

But what about all the people behind us on the interstate. You can’t just tow that truck out of the way. Standing it back up will close both lanes. They might still be there.
