Not quite the worst fog ever

January 28, 2013 by Lloyd 9 Comments

I’ve been driving back and forth from Seward to Lincoln for nearly 12 years. Something like 2,500 times. Yesterday was the second worst fog ever. The worst fog ever was just a few months ago, but I don’t want to talk about that one.

Lauren checks the weather in the mornings and yesterday she said that it was foggy. I asked how foggy and she said that there was zero visibility. It turns out that zero is a relative term. There was actually a little less fog than a few months ago, but, as if to make up for it, everything was covered with a thin coating of ice. Luckily, the ice was only bad in Seward. Once I got out on the highway it was back to just fog.

A few months ago during the worst fog (okay, it turns out I do want to talk about the worst fog), I was the second person in the line of cars that looked like it stretched over half a mile behind us. The person in the lead set our speed at about 35 miles per hour (speed limit here is 60) and that was fine with me.  During the 20 mile trip to Lincoln, only two people tried to pass us, and I only had to drive on the side of the road so that the guy who tried to pass us could avoid a head on collision once.  About a mile later we passed one three car pileup at an intersection (emergency vehicles had already arrived).

It was nerve wracking, but I wasn’t in front. I had very little responsibility. Yesterday, I was the lead driver.  That was much worse. Should I go 35mph? 45mhp? 65 until I caught up to the next car, and then it could be his problem? Well, the fog wasn’t as bad as last time, so I fluxuate around 45mph. A little faster when I thought I could see a little further and slower when I hadn’t seen any other cars in a while (is there a 70 car pileup ahead of me?).

Once again, two people passed us and sped off into the night. Only one almost ran head on into another car.  But what really scared me were the deer. I saw 5 deer yesterday on the road. There were probably more on the side of the road egging them on, but the fog was too thick to see them.

You know how everything is very quiet in the fog? I think they just didn’t hear the cars. First there were two deer in the other lane. They were just standing there when I drove past.  They really didn’t look like they were going anywhere (see honey badger). Just standing in the other lane.

I don’t think I would have seen the second group of three except there was a car coming the other way and they were just barely discernible in the space between our cars where our headlights gave up to the fog.  I was actually quite a bit further away from this set of deer, but they shook me up more. Seeing two deer is out of the ordinary (that only happens every few months). Barely seeing 5 in one morning is a little ridiculous.  Right after I saw the second set of deer, the second idiot passed me.

The photos are from the trip home. Visibility: 1/4 mile.

Strange weather afoot

September 13, 2010 by Lloyd 7 Comments

Kathryn Peperkorn, opera star, was flying into Omaha, and Lauren had Grandparent’s Tea at 7:00pm (go ahead, ask her), so I went to pick her up. Coming into Omaha at about 5:00pm the traffic going out was pretty bad. In fact, it was backed up behind an accident for nearly 4 miles at one point. Well, needless to say, I worked hard to find an alternate route.

The alternate route put us back on I-80 in more or less good time. We had avoided all of the traffic. Until the interstate stopped. We spent more or less an hour and a half crawling along (when we were moving at all) until we came up to this:

Okay, that might slow down traffic

Okay, that will stop traffic. No other cars. just a semi turned over in the interstate. Then we passed the second one. This is a photo of the THIRD one. Seriously?

Good grace to blow onto the shoulder

No other evidence of –here we’re  guessing– really, really high winds. Well, except for these guys. They started out on our side of the road.

One of them made it all the way across

From the other direction these cars were being escorted.

Follow me

But we made it home safely.

Mostly safe

But what about all the people behind us on the interstate. You can’t just tow that truck out of the way. Standing it back up will close both lanes. They might still be there.

April Showers and all that

April 3, 2008 by Lauren 4 Comments

Yes, I know it’s raining UNDER the umbrella.

My kids are getting into the weather. One of my boys is OBSESSED with the weather and got to visit one of the t.v. stations in Omaha on Tuesday and meet the weatherman. That, combined with Sunday night’s thunderstorm, has sparked a study of the weather. They’re asking the big, real-world questions like, “Can lightening kill you?” and “What happens if you go outside when there’s a twister?” and “Can you tie my shoe?” (C’mon – they’re four.)

Hot

August 9, 2007 by Lauren 8 Comments

Froggy

This is the view from our back door at 6:45 a.m.  When it’s hazy like this, that is only bad news.  It was like this on Monday, and that means a hot, sticky, miserable day.  Good thing that this is the first full day of the county fair!  (We hardly ever get to that, though – too much going on a this time of year.)

Keep cool, everybody.

Rainy day.

July 29, 2007 by Lauren 4 Comments

It’s actually raining here – a good, steady rain.  We’ve been dry for weeks now, so it’s nice to not get teased by the little sprinkles of the past few days.

Lloyd’s parents are visiting, and in the dash to straighten up the house, the camera dock has been moved and I can’t find it.  I’ve got some funny pictures from yesterday to post, but you may have to wait a bit.

What did you do with your Saturday?  What’s the weather like where you are?

Only Good Shot

June 24, 2007 by Lauren 2 Comments

A couple of nights ago I was driving home from Wal-Mart as the sun was setting, and I came across a golden field of (insert correct grain name here) that was filled with fireflies!  It was absolutely magical, but I didn’t have the camera.  So, the next night I told Lloyd and Brad that we had to go see them.  I had the time wrong and we were way too early, so it was a little disappointing, but there was a pretty good thunderstorm off to the south, and Lloyd took a bunch of pictures – and got this:

Dang

(In case you’re curious, the fireflies did come out later, but the pictures didn’t show up.  Go figure.)
