(Drat. This is the last back-up post I made this weekend, and I didn’t get to the bacon mat gallery yet. Tomorrow there might not be a post.)
That’s Crazy Cat Lady Syndrome. Alright, if my back-up posts have to be about cats, so be it. Cricket likes to sleep by me. I’m a good source of heat. Usually in the winter I’m under the covers at night with blankets piled on top – gotta keep warm. In the summer, though, it’s temperature regulation madness. Covers off, covers on, covers crumpled to the side, etc. Cricket doesn’t like my summer sleep habits- no smooth blankets to lie on. So, this is where she parks. (Yeah, I asked Lloyd to take a picture. I know I’m crazy.)

For the Mat Gallery
This was an experiment during one of my busy nights – individual fried bacon mats. They cooked quickly (about five minutes) but fell apart on the third flip. Nothing like trying to re-weave hot bacon as it fries. Plus they weren’t as nice and flat as baked bacon. Mission accomplished, though. Next time I might try microwaving, but I’m sure the texture would suffer.
I wrote this post before Peggy sent me some fantastic pictures! Hopefully this week I’ll get the gallery started, but I gotta tell you – Peggy will win all the prizes.
Speaking of Galleries….
We spoke of having a bacon mat gallery, but here is one that I’m even prouder of. Lloyd’s Cousin Sam borrowed my red Fluke when his family went out west on vacation. My instructions were that he should take pictures of it when he took it somewhere interesting. He did not disappoint! Behold:
Now, for an offer that I will only extend to Sam. I know how you crave a Fluke of your own. (Sam has a case of UAS – Ukulele Acquisition Syndrome.) Since I am a silly person and support your illness, I will set aside one dollar every day that you comment on this site, Sam. Not one dollar per comment, one dollar a day. You think I’m kidding? I am not. In a mere seven months you could have a Fluke. (Note: This offer only good for one Cousin Sam, True Blue Uke Disciple. When the rest of you have shown your mad song memorization skills and chord knowledge, I’ll think about it.)
Exhibit A
Lloyd thinks that perhaps we should start a bacon mat gallery! I tried to make individual mats a while back, which I’ll show later, but here is a wonderful, wonderful e-mail from my brother:
We made our very first BACON MAT!!!!!! The BLT’s were delicious, but I shoud’ve cooked the bacon a bit longer and also tried to drain more of the fat off as it cooked. Love you (just because, but also because you’ve taught us something new!)!!
Mark (and Rachel)
Woven bacon… is there nothing it can’t do? I’ve had the best luck when I don’t drain off the fat. Just let it stew in it’s own juices. I lift it up with two big ol’ spatulas. (Not the ones that Lloyd cleans the gutters with, thank you.)
Not much
Sorry, but I don’t have much to say. Working late, home visits at night, this is not my best lifestyle for writing. I don’t even have a cool link to post. Maybe Lloyd will read this later and save me. See you later!
Taste of summer
Here it is, folks – my first real tomato sandwich of summer made with a real, vine-ripened tomato that I didn’t have to grow!! See, this is why I don’t garden. Every spring I give a passing thought to maybe planting a container of cherry tomatoes, because ripe tomatoes are my Kryptonite of summer. Then, I don’t. Too much work, too much effort. Then, when I’m regretting my decision, all the people with too many tomatoes share their bounty! We had TWO people at work today bring extras! Woo – hoo!! Here’s a picture of my snack: White bread, Miracle Whip, tomato, salt.
With so many tomatoes around, BLT’s were the obvious choice for dinner. On the down side, I was in a hurry to get to home visits tonight, and had no time for a bacon mat. So I had to FRY my bacon…
and we ate FRIED bacon….
like animals.
