Re-do

October 4, 2009 by Lauren 8 Comments

When Lloyd got booted out of his classroom relocated in August, he had no place for his many, many classroom plants, so he brought them home. In the past, they were only here for the summer months, so finding a place for them was not an issue. This year, though, he put them in our entryway, which isn’t the best spot. We never notice them, so they never get any water. Plus, its on the north side of the house in an unheated enclosed porch, so it would be a slow, dark, cold death for those poor things this winter.

So, a little shuffle-shuffle sweep-sweep later, our living room looks different! I never retrieved my camera from school, though, so you have to suffer through taken-from-across-the-room-with-the-webcam photos.

Before:
Oh, sofa, you've served me well.

The first shuffle-shuffle:
Heh heh. It's an illooosion!

Note the ‘table’ that was behind the sofa. It’s an ironing board and that blue bedsheet is impregnated with years and years of dust. This is also when the majority of ‘sweep-sweep’ happened, along with some ‘GAH! What-the-heck-is-THAT?’ discoveries.
Not a good look when exposed.

Lloyd helped get the plants out of the entryway and spruced ’em up.
Where's Lloydo?

So, there you have it – plants moved to a south-facing window. And what was on the t.v. while I worked? That’s right – Bridezillas. That show is magic for getting things done around here.

Good luck, guys.

A huge pain

September 27, 2009 by Lauren 13 Comments

I hate our buckeye tree. I take that back, I love the tree and the shade that it provides, but I really, really dislike the buckeyes.

When we moved into this house it was winter, and we got to see the trees bud and the glory of nature in springtime and blah blah blah it was breathtaking, and then in fall this tree dropped these shiny, chocolate-brown orbs that were so smooth and satiny, I gathered them unto me and put them in a glass bowl to display on our dining room table.

Where they promptly got moldy.

Since then, I’ve come to realize that these nuts are one of the reasons our yard is so crazy bumpy, and I curse them each autumn. Stupid, beautiful buckeyes. I’ve thought about going out there and sucking them up with a shop vac, or paying a child a penny each to pick them up, but laziness always wins and I curse them from the comfort of my living room.

It's almost time to buy new socks.

Brad, however, has done us a huge favor by changing the backyard area. Now they are easier to spot, and I might even gather them up to burn them or something, but I have a question: Brad, can I use the shells as ‘mulch’ by those lambs’ ears or will they do harm?

I would remove the buckeyes, of course.

Poorly thought out

September 21, 2009 by Lauren 8 Comments

I’ve decided that my new obsession will be solar heating. I came across this little article from Mother Earth News about a solar Heat Grabber, and the next hour of my Sunday afternoon was spent making a poor prototype out of cardboard, plastic wrap and duct tape. Basically, you open your window a little, stick this thing out in the sunshine, and you get hot air pumping into your south-facing room without sacrificing the light coming in.

Too small for actual heating, but cheap enough to comfort my soul.

Yes, that is duct tape on my window.

In the winter, such a thing would only work upstairs, since the house to the south shades the windows on the first floor. I am struggling beecause there is no way on this planet that I would ever make a nice-looking thing. This cardboard one is at the very height of my skilz. I’ve been daydreaming about alternatives – a black carpet in the room? Bottles of water spray-painted black and sitting on the windowsills to make a heat sink? One of these? Oh, the wonderful, wonderful minutes I’ll spend in my brain, waiting for the cold to come!!

Pick one

September 6, 2009 by Lauren 20 Comments

So, several of the weekend’s many projects are being derailed either by laziness or circumstances beyond my control. That’s o.k. – the naps have been splendid. I might still paint, though.

Anyway, pick a paint color.

Go bold or go home. That's Lloyd's motto.

Knock Knock

July 30, 2009 by Lauren 17 Comments

Who’s there?

Stupid cat.

Stupid cat who?

Stupid cat who can’t open the new cat door.

PUSH with your FACE.

Seriously, those senile cats are driving me nuts.

I should have used a jigsaw in the first place, but I didn't own one then.

Here I slaved over making that travesty of a cat door look less like a beer-induced bad idea, but they couldn’t figure out how to use it. Cricket kept trying to open it with her paw (instead of her head), but then her toes got pinched. Pfennig got all panicked because she had to use the litter box, but the door was ‘closed’. My physically pushing their heads through just freaked them out, so yes – I had to demonstrate with my own head.

I think I’ve sunk to a new low.

Lazi-ish day

July 21, 2009 by Lauren 16 Comments

One of my favorite things to do is fall asleep in front of the t.v., so that was last night’s mission. I woke up at 7a.m. and – get this – went right back to sleep. Best vacation ever!

Then I got up and tried to be a little productive. One of the things on the list was to fill in the new hole in the front yard. When the tree trimmers were here Monday, they pulled out the post with the basketball hoop by our driveway that came with the house. We never use it, so it was time to go. The post had a ton of concrete at the base, so removing it made quite a hole.

It's not as deep as the cats' grave.

I went out to fill it in with some of the sod that Brad removed from our yard. And when I say ‘I went out to fill it’, I mean Brad did.

I took pictures.

Work, Royuk, work!

Now it will be harder to tell people where we live. It used to be ‘the last house on the left with the basketball hoop’. Now Santa will never find me.
