cookies

Meh. Not as good as I’d hoped.

February 11, 2015 by Lauren 5 Comments

Those dumb cookies are done, and they are not what I had hoped.

Sometime in elementary school we did an ‘art’ project where we took half a heart, cut off a strip around the edge, glued that down; cut another strip, glued that down on the opposite side; back and forth etc. It looked something like this:

image

I wondered if you made red-and-white pinwheel cookie dough (but more an oval shape than a wheel shape), cut it on a severe diagonal, flipped it and reassembled, would the cut cookies look like those hearts?

image

Would it?

image

Dang. That cut is lopsided. Rats.

image

Avert your eyes! Cookie guts! (This dough was too warm. Should have let it chill longer.)

Anyway, the lopsided heart-shaped dough log chilled for days, then I did the ol’ slice-n-bake on ‘seasoned’ -not dirty – ‘seasoned’ cookie sheets.

Changes should be made, but I’m too tired to revamp these.

After baking, the pointy part wasn’t very pointy, so they kind of look like mutant mittens.

Next year, cookies. Next year.

iTrouble

February 9, 2015 by Lauren 5 Comments

Something is wrong with my iPad. It’s not fatal, but it certainly is annoying. The magnetic case doesn’t put it to sleep anymore. I took it along when I went to Lincoln Sunday afternoon and by the time I got back it had used up all the battery and was HOT.

Lloyd brought home some old cases to see if that would solve the problem but it hasn’t. Booooo…. Time to start traveling with a charger.

In other news, I have a crazy cookie idea that is not turning out as planned. I made the dough and had hoped to bake the cookies and have something to show for my efforts, but the dough is chilling in the freezer and I’m going to bake them Wednesday night. (My kids are having a mini concert on Thursday.) What kind of crazy cookie do you think I’m making? (I really just want you to say something wonderfully original so I can make that cookie, stealing your idea and taking all the credit.)

Out of time.

September 14, 2007 by Lauren 12 Comments

We went out to eat last night, and during dinner Lloyd sprung on me that a window guy was coming over at 8.  I was a bit peeved, to say the least, since that was going to cut into my ‘laying around on the couch’ time. So I ran home quick, cleaned up a bit, then put on my jammies and hid upstairs.  (I do not like when window people come over.  They’re harder to get rid of than bats.)  Around 8:20, Lloyd came up to tell me that the window people were detained in David City and would not be coming over.  Whew!  But by that time I was already in bed, so I didn’t get a post made.

I will give you these pictures that Cousin Rachel sent instead.  She says that she baked them in her car on a hot day, but I can barely believe it.  Rae, what are the details?

How long have those been in there?

A Crucial Step

February 2, 2007 by Lauren 15 Comments

(In response to Brad’s comment – “Not dead!” I had to open the center this morning, so there was no time to post.)

On occasion I make chocolate chip cookies.  I’m not really a cookie person, so this is the only kind I ever make.  I memorized the recipe in college, and once during a geography test I had no idea what the answer was to one of the questions, so I wrote down the recipe.  (My professor was not amused.  Hmmph.)

It’s the basic Nestle recipe with a few changes – Criso instead of butter, twice as much vanilla, and a little less flour.  The other important step is to chill (freezing is even better!) the dough.  Last night we had company coming over – Kristi and Jerome Leckband and their sweet daughter Joanna – and I needed something snacky to have around.  Time was short, so I thought I’d use nature’s freezer.

Crunchy leaves and snow - the real secret ingredients.

(Don’t worry, Annette.  I covered the bowl after I took the picture.  Nobody wants squirrel fur in their cookies.)
