For Science!

October 17, 2012 by Lloyd 9 Comments

My school is really good about letting me go to technology conferences (as long as it doesn’t cost any money). Last week I went to the Nebraska Technology Coordinators Fall Meeting and yesterday I went to the Nebraska 1:1 meeting.

They were both in Kearney, which is about 120 miles away. Last week I went in a van full of other technology coordinator type people, but yesterday I was traveling alone, so I did a little experiment. On the way out to Kearney, I took the interstate and on the way back I took highway. Here’s the data:

Start Time End Time Total Time Distance Avg. Speed Gas MPG Total Cost
Interstate 7:05am 8:45am 1:40 120 miles 72 mph 3.86 gal. 31 mpg $13.86
Highway 3:15pm 5:25pm 2:10 113 miles 52 mph 2.55 gal. 44 mpg $9.15

If those speeds seem low to you, it’s because it takes me a while to get up to speed. On the Interstate I was cruising along at about 80 mph, but the trip out has about 10 miles where the speed limit is between 35 and 60 mph. On the Highway, I was traveling at 62 mph,  but  the trip back has about 5 small towns where the speed limit dips down to 35-45 mph. There was also a little construction on the way back and I was just waiting around for a few minutes. I turned the car off.

So? Is it worth taking 30 minutes longer to save $4.71? That’s $9.42 per hour or $18,840 per year (which qualifies for food stamps for a family of 2 –they don’t count cats).

A little experiment

January 15, 2009 by Lauren 19 Comments

So, 9 p.m. rolled around again and I wandered around the house looking for some post fodder so I could go to bed.  Unfortunately it’s the biggest cold snap of the season and I left my point-and-shoot thermometer at school.   I took some pictures of the kitchen windows using my probe thermometer, and was surprised at how cold it was behind the towels ‘curtains’.

Burrzy wurrzy.

Yep, ‘Lo’.  It only reads to 32 degrees.  (It’s 66 on this side of the towel curtain. Dnag it!)  Time for an experiment! We’ll see if a shot glass of water will freeze on the window sill.  In the control group, I’ll also put a shot glass on a non-towel-covered window, rare though those may be in this house.   Brad, I’m sure you’ll be up before the results are posted.

Freeze, my little one, freeze.

UPDATE: Riddle me this.  It didn’t freeze – not even a little on the top.  Was the window sill too warm?  That’s my guess, since hte water itself is below 32.  Hmmph.

With or without?

June 18, 2007 by Lauren 7 Comments

I love our house. It’s old and creaky, but it’s ours. One thing I do not love about it, though, is how hot it gets upstairs in the summer. Brad can attest to this, since he sleeps in the hottest room in the building. Our regular plan is to close all the vents on the first floor so that the cold air is pumped all the way upstairs and then floats down, but that’s not terribly effective at night after the roof has baked all day. So we’re trying something new – putting a barrier up so that the cold has to stay around a little longer. So far it seems to work, although walking through it with a basket of laundry I accidentally gave Pfennig a pretty righteous kick in the side. Stupid cat. Who dares sleep in my path?!

That's right - it's a fitted sheet and a tension rod. Back off, NASA! Quit stealing our ideas!!

Hmmm. Blurry.
