Cheap re-do

May 3, 2008 by Lauren 6 Comments

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve actually been whittling away at the kitchen. Every so often I’d scrape a little more paper, and then decided to use up paint from the basement stash. We have so many leftover cans of paint you wouldn’t believe it. There are several cans from the previous owners, and various gallon, quart, pint and spray cans from my projects. It’s nuts.

The first attempt was the yellow from Brad’s room, and it was nice, but it didn’t go with the dining room. So, I used brown paint from the downstairs bathroom for the top part, and tan paint from the upstairs bathroom for the bottom. There: it’s all done and I only spent 4 bucks for new roller covers. To honor the event, I have made a movie! Cricket just loves when there are projects that require the ladder. It’s the ultimate cat toy. (Something went wonky when we uploaded it, so it no longer fits just right with the music. I do not care.)

I’m sure you’ve been wondering…

January 29, 2008 by Lauren 9 Comments

Here’s the latest on the super-slow house project.  I manage to rip off about two square feet of wall paper a week.  What was I thinking?  Lloyd asked, “So what’s your plan?”  Plan?  I have no plan.  I’m ripping wallpaper and a plan will come in June, when I’m done.

It looks much worse in real life.

I’m not ripping paper tonight, though.  I’ve been in my jammies since 6:30 and had plans to go to bed right after American Idol.  Then stupid House had to be a stupid new episode.  Now I’ll be up all night!

Care to guess?

Well, it’s up and it’s done.  Badly done, really.  The problem with being a Person of Instant Gratification is that when I do a project, I only have a few hours to finish it before I’m fed up with it.  I was at that point two nights ago,  Anyway, I’ll unveil it and tell you the details later.

What do you think we put on the walls?

Don't use your CSI tools to read behind the scribbles.

UPDATE:  Here’s a bit of a clue.  Just so you know, I’m going to re-do it because I hate how there’s so much space between the words.

Stupid too much space...

For science!

February 19, 2007 by Lauren 8 Comments

Which is which?

I began to experiment with Simlpe Green vs. water to remove the border adhesive.  Here you see a completely organized beginning to an earth-shattering scientific experiment.  What you don’t see is how I kept forgetting to go back and re-wet them since I was looking up useless things on the internet.  So, I wound up slopping Simple Green solution over the whole wall.  It was successful for several reasons: 1) I didn’t cover it with plastic wrap and leave it to sit for a whole hour, 2) I used a plastic scraper instead of a metal one.  Hooray!  The goal is to take it off a foot at a time.  At this rate, I’ll be done by Easter!

Not quite the worst day ever

'Bye, ugly grapes

Change is a’comin’ again!  After ten years,  I am committed to getting the stupid grape border off the dining room walls.  (It came with the house.)  I tore off a little strip last week, and yesterday worked on soaking off the glue.  Guess what happenes when you let glue disolver sit too long on a painted plaster walls  Yeah, the paint comes off.  Grrrrr…

In other news, Lloyd and I went around the house and made a list of things that really need to be repaired around here – the humidifier on the furnace, call the basement people to see about our foundation, the peeling paint around the windows, the constantly leaky toilet, the banister railing needs fixing, and our washing machine that was just repaired two weeks ago is leaking again.  We worked for about an hour, then I had a glass of wine and a two hour nap.  That’s how things get done, right?
