Macro Fun

October 17, 2009 by Lloyd 9 Comments

I was working at school for about 13 hours today trying to get student accounts to log into Netware 6.5 from the latest version of OS10. In the end, after upgrading 3 servers and installing a few patches, digging through lots of documentation and trying lots of different fixes, there were still a few bugs.

Cute little babies

This little fellow was shy.

I dare you to click here for a full size image.

I have to go back tomorrow. Wish me luck.

SWARM

July 19, 2009 by Lauren 16 Comments

Friday evening a co-worker from the CDC (it’s Kate, but y’all wouldn’t know her since she never comments) told me that there was a swarm of bees/wasps on the playground. They were in a place easily walled off to keep the kids safe, but knowing how winged insects like to take off with small children, I decided that they needed to go.

SWARM! It's from some Spiderman thing.

Enter Lloyd.

Lloyd, who is brave about all things fly-y, took a can of wasp killer and just sprayed those wasps until they were dead, dead, dead – and all their babies, too. The directions on the can said to ‘spray a few seconds, or until the area is moistened’, but he used the whole can (spray * spray * spray), which might have been overkill. (Time out for pun-induced laughter.)

(Are you done laughing yet? We’re on a schedule here.)

It's not a great shot, but I was afraid to get close.

No humans were harmed in the making of this post. Some wasps really got it, though.

An adorable infestation

April 26, 2009 by Lauren 14 Comments

We’ve got a bug problem.

I find it fascinating that the mere shape of an insect can affect my reaction to it. Insects give me the jibblies if they’re not safely behind glass of some sort. Yet while I’m not a bug person, ladybugs are o.k. in my book. At the end of last summer we had DOZENS of crickets in our basement. If I remember correctly, we didn’t do a post about it because I was a little ashamed and a lot creeped out. This past week, though, I’ve carted out well over a dozen live ladybugs, and have yet to vacuum up the dead or mauled-by-cats ones.

So, if our house is on fire and the children all gone …. you know who to blame.
