Hallelujah

April 7, 2015 by Lloyd 5 Comments

We sing the Hallelujah Chorus on Easter at St. John. Well, we often sing the Hallelujah Chorus. on Easter at St. John. The Choir and anyone who wants to go up and join them sings. Last time we went up it was really crowded and it was hard to figure out where sections were and there wasn’t enough music. But on the plus side, there were a lot of people singing, and that’s what you want.

This year we didn’t go up to sing, and it looked like maybe we were not the only people who decided not to do so. But there were plenty of people around us who were singing or humming along quietly. Lauren wondered if we could use the new screens to have everyone who knew it sing without going up to the balcony.

What’s that? You haven’t seen the new screens? Well, by all means, take a look:

We don’t use them that often, and we wanted something that would be unobtrusive when they were not in use. But no, it wasn’t cheap to put them in.

Lauren wanted something that you could follow along with easily, and my first idea was something like this:

The guy who does these has done many over the years, and you can download the software to do them as well. My favorite, probably because it was the first one I saw, is:

Anyway, I was thinking of a much cleaner version of the Hallelujah Chorus one where you only had the 4 choral parts, and put the words in with it. But that seemed like a lot of work. Instead, I did put together a little proof of concept. This may not work in your browser, or it might work in your browser, but not work on your screen size. I formatted it to 1920×1080 screens. And I know the timing is probably off, and the animation will probably stutter.

It’s just a proof of concept. Layoff, will you?

Shoot & Scoot*

March 19, 2009 by Lauren 19 Comments

We had a photo session tonight for our new church directory, and it occurred at the end of a horrendously long day near the end of a stupidly sleepless week. I had hoped to get home to get a face transplant beforehand, but we went right from work to the church. They were running about 20 – 30 minutes late, and while that wasn’t so bad, I was STARVING and needed to get this over with.

We sat while the photographer moved our arms, legs and heads like little lumps of clay. Apparently there is something grossly wrong with my chin because she kept saying, “Move your chin over. Chin back. Back some more.” Sheesh.

Anyway, the way this thing works is that after the photos you wait to meet with the salesperson who offers you a FREE 8 x 10 and then tries to sucker you into buying some sort of package. When the photographer asked us to sit down, Lloyd said, “Yeah, we’re not going to stay for that part.” So, we left for dinner and they get to pick the photo that goes in the directory. I hope they pick the one with my huge, errant chin.

(*Like Dine & Dash – get it?)

Church Art

October 21, 2008 by Lauren 13 Comments

It’s not what you think. No beautiful stained glass windows or banners.

At our church we have prayer request sheets in each pew, and every Sunday I am delighted by the crazy drawings some kid has drawn on the back. I’ve wanted to take pictures of them for a long time, and last Sunday I happened to have my camera phone. (Which happens to have been returned. Don’t tell us cellular guy.) So, the picture quality leaves something to be desired.

Wouldn’t a gallery of these be hilarious?

Explosion or monster on its side?

Riding a rocket or guitar?

What's that movie with the guy riding the torpedo?

I’m not sure what this is, but it doesn’t look too good for that one guy.

Pastor Lloyd

October 12, 2008 by Lloyd 15 Comments

Doesn’t he look more like a ninja in this picture?

First of all, I was wearing my suit, not some pastor costume. Second of all, that’s a box of Kleenex in my hand in the picture, not a box of myrrh.

I was the worship leader at our local nursing home yesterday. Gil Daenzer asked me about a year ago if I would be willing to do it. He’s a pretty persuasive guy. He pointed out that it was just once a year, and that since I already led chapel at school in front of 400 people, how hard could it be to lead worship in front of 20 people (some of whom would be asleep)? Well, I said I would do it, and about a year later I received a letter in the mail saying I was up in a month. Naturally, I became sick the week I had to do it.

So I had to start off my sermonette by explaining that I had a box of Kleenex with me, not because I was especially emotional and expected to get all weepy, not because I had a good story to tell that somehow revolved around a box of Kleenex, not because it would serve as the basis for a beautiful object lesson, but because I had a cold, and was libel to have to blow my nose at some point, and when you have to blow your nose, it’s good to have a box of Kleenex handy.

Everything really went pretty well. During one of the services I got things a little out of order (we did the confession after the sermon hymn, oops), but I didn’t have to blow my nose.
