Death Penalty

May 20, 2015 by Lloyd 5 Comments

Lauren isn’t feeling well, and she asked me to write a post.

It looks like through some interesting political maneuvering that the death penalty might become illegal in Nebraska. Governor Ricketts  has promised to veto the bill, but it looks like there are enough votes to override his veto.

I, myself, hold no strong views on the death penalty. While I generally think that it doesn’t do any good,  that it costs a lot of money and that we probably get it wrong every so often; I don’t think there’s anything morally wrong with it.

But I recently ran across someone who that the death penalty is demanded by God and that you couldn’t be a Christian unless you supported it. This was on the internet, so I had time to read through and think about the arguments that were presented, so I don’t think I misunderstood them. You can read them here if you want. Well, actually you can’t, because the website is poorly designed. But if you go to the menu at the top, choose Topics then Religion, you will see the pages that, one can only assume, that page was meant to link to.

For a Christian, the death penalty is the cornerstone of human government, the first law that God laid down in Gen. 9:6. To knock it out of our society is to knock God’s moral authority out. Then we are to the wolves. In Europe, it has led to atrocities such as that Norway mass murderer of 77 people at that camp, many of them children and youth, who was given the “max” in Norway — 21 years in prison. It’s all a slippery slope downward, justice-wise, when you start by eliminating the God-ordained death penalty.

–Some random person on the internet

Anyway, I fully expect no one to comment on this.

By using them

*WARNING: This post contains a graphic image of abused feet.* — Lauren

Ok, Lloyd. Take it away:

I have three friends who are running for state legislature and it’s getting pretty close to election day:

  • Mark Kolterman (District 24 which includes Seward)
  • Laura Ebke (District 32 just south of Seward)
  • Brent Smoyer (District 26 which contains Lincoln Lutheran)

This weekend while Lauren was busy doing stuff, I was volunteering for Laura’s campaign. We walked some of the towns in her district handing out literature and talking about all of the things that would make Laura a good state representative. I’ve known Laura for about 6 years, so it was easy to come up with good things to say about her.

Did I mention the walking? We walked a lot.  We covered Martell, Sprague, Hallam and Dewitt. There may have been one or two others. Every street in every one of those towns. I don’t wear teacher clothes when we go door to door. Shirt and Tie is just a little bit formal for knocking on doors in rural Nebraska. My normal outfit is jeans, a button down shirt and nice shoes.

I always worry that my nice shoes won’t be good for walking, so I bring my teacher shoes along too. I did that on Saturday and didn’t need them, so I didn’t bring them on Sunday. That was a mistake. After a scant mile of walking on Sunday I knew I had a blister. Ten minutes later I knew I had two of them.

There really wasn’t anything I could do. The good people of De Witt were not going to tell themselves why they should consider voting for Laura. I just kept walking. Luckily it gave me a good reason to just walk. Eric was my partner on Sunday and he was a real go getter. He figured that he could cover more houses if he ran between houses. Kids.

I didn’t take my shoes off until we were back at Laura’s house and I was back in my car. I’m glad I didn’t.

When I got to school today I told Joel, “I hurt my legs over the weekend… by using them.”

What happened Saturday

January 11, 2009 by Lloyd 13 Comments

Okay. Um. Tap. Tap. Is this thing on? Lauren said that I can post something on Sundays, because no one reads this on Sundays anyway. Yesterday was longish. We got up early and drove to Fremont. The Republican State Central Committee meeting was there, and I was representin’ (fold arms over chest and say, “yo yo yo”). It was mostly boring with a lot of speeches and elections.

It turns out the Republicans in Nebraska are very upset with the second congressional district and want to go back to a “winner take all” system like most of the rest of the US (big shout out to Maine to also keepin’ representational democracy real). I had to speak out against the idea, because (a) it looks desperate, (b) it’s better to be right than to go along with the crowd, and (c) if you have better ideas they should stand on their own in all three districts.

Evidently I was not very persuasive as the motion passed something like 90 to 30. But lots of relatively important people (governors, congressmen and such) had to listen to me, and that’s what’s important.

Oh, and it was also Ukulele night. When we were done with our meal we were talking about beets with the chef (the greens thereof were part of the special) and he mentioned that he had a beet salad and asked if we wanted to try it.

can you name all the ingredients?

Just call me First Lady

May 15, 2008 by Lauren 13 Comments

I’m riding on Lloyd’s coattails of fame again. He’s been elected as some sort of delegate, whatever that means. I don’t know why they did that – he’s terrible at delegating things. He’s all ‘If you want something done right, do it yourself’.

The official announcement was delivered by a government official to the box we have affixed on the outside of our house for important deliveries such as these. We also received an important document from Bank of America that we should OPEN IMMEDIATELY! for a new card with low…. never mind, that’s sensitive information.

I love how official the certificate looks! It’s chock-full of herebys and dulys and whereofs. My very favorite is the last line: “In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Seal of said County this 14th day of May, 2008.” It really makes that faded stamp look historic.

I shoulda RickRolled ya, Peggy.

Oh, Sherry, our love goes on. goes on.

Oh, all comments must include either hereby, duly, whereof or hereunto. Double points for using all of them.
