Gadget

Seemed like a good idea at the time.

April 16, 2008 by Lauren 8 Comments

We’ve talked about this before. One of the challenges of living in an old house is getting the hot/cold air to stay where it will do the most good. When we first moved into this house it was frustrating that in the summer it would be a million degrees upstairs where we slept and cold enough to keep meat in the basement. Some friends of ours, the Glanzers, were visiting and John and I came up with some mighty fine solutions the more beer we consumed. I settled on “cuttin’ a hole in that dang ol’ door to keep the cold where I need it, but still lettin’ the cats down to the litter box.”

And that is when I learned the very valuable lesson that you shouldn’t drink and then use power tools. I tried the first cut with a circular saw, which just left a nice, nibbled track across the door. Then I switched to a drill for the corners and the jig saw to cut the crooked lines.

Sure I had some regrets the next day (we can never sell this house with that door) but hey -it does work in the summer. At least it did before the cats got so fat.

Holy Efficiency, Batman!

UPDATE: Pfennig is alive and well. This is NOT a stuffed doorstop.

Stop: Tiffin Time.

A latched stack of snacks

I have become increasingly surprised at the quality of lunches we’ve had at my school. I’m not going to get all judgmental and negative, but there have been a few disappointing ones in a row. Every so often I wonder why I’m not taking my own lunch. A while ago I found out about bento lunches, which are just the cutest things ever for people with acres of time on their hands. People make up these delicious little boxes of good things to eat, like a tiny little potluck in a box. (They originate in Japan, so many contain sushi and things I can’t pronounce.) I successfully did not buy a Mr. Bento for months and months, which would hold tons of food. (It was insulated!! How could I resist?)

In Omaha on Saturday, I did cave and buy this little guy.

It could hold a LOT of quarters.

It’s called a tiffin box, and it was ten bucks. It’s a British/Indian thing to hold food. Stephannie has one in her kitchen, and I’ve envied it for years. This one is much smaller, but it’ll hold a lunch. I figure I can fit some cut-up apple and a little sandwich in there, and I’m good to go. Yes, I know it’s probably a foolish purchase – but it’s so gadgety, and much cheaper than Mr. Bento!

(Mr. Bento has the advantage of being microwavable. Mr. Tiffin will blow my microwave up.)

If I actually get my act together and pack a lunch tomorrow, I’ll try to post a picture.

UPDATE:  I actually did it and I’m not going to be horribly late for work!  (Chicken sandwich, apple, sugar snap peas, cheese curds.)

Mark & Myrna

March 12, 2008 by Lauren 17 Comments

Gadget Boy was here last night, with more wonderful toys! My brother Mark works for the Seminary in St. Louis and was in Nebraska doing some visits and he got to stay the night. He showed us his super-cool Garmin, which has an MP3 player, a photo album, language translators, a GPS guidance system and a bottle opener. We took the required super gadget shot!

A very busy man!

I need one of those things so badly. I have trouble with east & west, and right and left, for that matter. Directions are hard. This things shows you in a little tiny car, and tells you when & where to turn in a sweet little voice. (Mark calls her Myrna.) Plus, the graphics kind of look like Guitar Hero! (Or Handbell Hero)

That’s us! In the tiny car!

The best part of having company come is that it motivates my to get off my duff and clean the house. The guest room has been closed off since November, with experimental towels hanging over the windows and boxes and bags of stuff accumulating. It’s all better now, so I’m dying to do some sort of project in there!

Before:

Bleh

During:

Hey, it’s getting there.

After:

Woo-hoo!

Visit again, Mark, in about two or three months when that room’s a pit again, ok?

This is not an experiment. It is the tried and true way to bake a potato. I believe Brad the Terrible will get a kick out of it.

It will have its revenge. Look at the greenish tinge.

Recipe: Impale potato with spike. Rub with oil. Sprinkle salt in its wounds. Toss in red-hot oven until it cries for mercy. Devour.

I really hate potatoes.

The real reason

February 20, 2008 by Lauren 13 Comments

Ok, so here’s the real reason I freaked out so much about misplacing my camera. That FedEx package that had arrived earlier in the day had brought me some camera accessories! I ordered an extra battery and a charger for a crazy great deal. (My camera can only be charged when it’s sitting on the dock.) They’re not name-brand, so I’m completely prepared for the battery to possibly melt my camera from the inside, but I’m willing to risk it.

The other thing I bought was a mini-tripod!! I am so returning the huge one from Best Buy, because this little guy is all I need! (And it was only $3.99 at SterlingTek. It’s so cute!)

Obligatory quarter included

It fits in your pocket, and it’s so gadget-y!

small yet mighty
