Gadget

To my fans

January 16, 2008 by Lauren 17 Comments

I like to buy multiples of things.  Not everything – just certain things.  Early in the marriage I had a thing for clocks, lamps and fans.  I don’t need to buy the clocks and lamps anymore, but fans are difficult to pass up. Not counting utility fans like the vent fan over the stove, the fan in the furnace, etc., I have ….. I’m not telling.  It’s embarrassing.

Anyway, when I went to buy my super pillow, this little guy was on clearance.  I had several bouts of ‘put it down’ when it was on the shelves at Bed, Bath & Beyond this summer, but now he’s come home.  It has floppy fabric blades, for cryin’ out loud!  AND it folds up!!!  I love you, little fan. I’ll use you once then put you on a shelf to get dusty.

It's fanerific.

Max Flax

December 30, 2007 by Lauren 12 Comments

Do you know how much flaxseed meal Brad Royuk eats every day? A surprising amount. See this?

Yummy.

That spoon is piled higher than Marge Simpson’s hair! And he eats two of them! *Jibblie* Looks like a compost pile.

So much flaxseed!

Peggy, the rest of this post is for you. I wanted to test the terra cotta saucer thing, so I got one at Wal-Mart. I wanted a big one, but they only had a six-inch-diameter one. That actually worked out fine for my little loaf. I believe I could bake a larger one on it, and the cost for this little miracle? Ninety-seven cents! (I’m pretty sure it’s going to crack eventually, though. They only had one, and it has a little fissure in it.)

I sprinkled some of the flaxseed meal on the bread before I baked it, and let me just say – don’t do that. Those oil-filled flecks burnt like firewood. Not tasty.

You're tired of the bread pictures, aren't you?

Envirosax vs. Chicobags

November 17, 2007 by Lauren 16 Comments

All bundled up.

I’ll admit that I’ve become a little obsessed about reusable grocery bags, but I heard the story about the place in the Pacific Ocean twice the size of Texas that has all that plastic floating around and it creeped me out. (One million pieces of trash per square mile.) I already told you about the Envirosax, which I love, but I went ahead and bought some Chico bags to compare the two styles. Hopefully someone out there in intraweb-land may find this useful.

Envirosax have a lot going for them – they’re cute, have awesome patterns, they hold quite a lot of stuff, and best of all, the handles will fit over your shoulder. Lloyd and I do a once-a-week grocery trip, and can fit all our purchases in 3 or 4 bags. The down side – it takes me a little bit of time to re-roll them, but I might just be clumsy. I also had something punch a hole in one bag. (I patched it. No need to throw it out.) Here are some diagrams of how it rolls/unrolls.

You unsnap the straps, and it pops open.

It rolled faster than I could take the picture.

The sides are folded in thirds around the handle.

Yep.

Unfold the handle, unfold the bag- viola’!

A bag!

To re-roll, fold the bag in half, fold the handle down, fold the sides in thirds, roll like a little sleeping bag, snap shut. It takes longer to type the directions than it takes to roll it, but you can see how it’s a bit fussy. It’s windbreaker-like material, so it’s a little slippery. However, it’s a very sleek, compact package, and I always keep two in my tiny purse. (I ‘pimped it out’ with some elastic straps so they’d stay put.)

Two bags, a phone, a wallet, a camera, lip stuff, and a pen.

I haven’t taken the Chicobags shopping yet, but they are just the same size as a regular plastic t-shirt bag. The straps can’t fit over your shoulder, but I think the plus for these is the ease of putting it back in the bag. (It goes wicked fast.) To use the bag, just undo -the cinch cord, grab the bag and pull it out.

Open sesame.

It comes out inside-out, so shake it right-side out and the pouch becomes a little pocket inside to hold your keys or whatever. Here are the two together for size comparison:

Does size matter?

And just for kicks, a plastic bag.

Bad plastic bag! Bad!

So, overall, I like them both. The Envirosax will always live in my purse, but when I don’t have a purse, the Chico bag has a handy little clip that could attach to anything. They both pack up equally small. The fabric seems similar. The Envirosax holds more, but the Chicobag is so much easier to put away. They both get an A+ for gadgety-ness in my book!

(I also realize that now I have an over-abundance of reusable bags. Maybe I can give some away for Christmas?)

UPDATE: I recently ordered a Chicobag Vita, and was wondering if they made it out of a different fabric because it was so crinkly.  Looking back on this post, I see that mine used to be crinkly, too.  They soften up after a couple of uses.

Let it begin.

Crazy Heat Lady is back in business! I’ve hung a ‘temporary’ curtain in the stairway, closed all the vents upstairs and any unnecessary rooms down here, and I’m pleased to report that at 8:09 p.m. the downstairs is a chilly 68.7 and the upstairs is an even chillier 65.2!! Yessir, Lloyd, it’s going to be a miserable winter! One of these days I’ll post about my souped-up bed that finally has the foot warmer and some serious insulation! (Don’t worry, Brad. We’ll turn on the heat when you visit. Just a little.)
What a pretty shower curtain!

Who are we kidding about this thing being temporary? I put some nails up on the other side and this thing will never get replaced.

I’m picking out a thermos for you…

October 16, 2007 by Lauren 10 Comments

I’ve been looking at thermoses (thermi?) for about a year now. I bought one last Christmas from Target that’s pretty cute, but small. Off and on I’d browse the thermos aisles in stores, checking thrift stores, generally being pitiful. (Brad actually witnessed the ‘put it down’ thing when I found one at T.J. Maxx this summer. I’m sure he has no memory of it. It was a light blue & green plaid beauty. My heart skipped a beat.)

Anyway, on Sunday I bought a thermos that has brought me nothing but joy! It’s as if someone looked into my mind and thought, “How can we make a thermos irresistibly gadgety?” Oh man oh man. It has a carry bag, a LARGE cap that becomes a travel mug, and when you look at it you think, “Yeah, but I’d want a lid for that so I don’t slop stuff on me.” Well, guess what? You unzip the bottom of the bag, unscrew the bottom of the thermos, and there’s a sippy lid tucked right inside!! Plus, it was cheap – ten bucks! I love this thermos so much. I wish a doctor would put me on a liquid diet so I’d have to take it everywhere.

750 ml of awesomeness

Behold it's glory!

IKEA hack

October 14, 2007 by Lauren 13 Comments

Deanne once asked if our kitchen was always clean, and the answer is ‘no’. Our house is always in a state of quasi-messy, and I guess it’s a good thing that we take lots of photos for this site in the kitchen – it shames me into cleaning the counters. Speaking of cleaning, I’ve been thinking that it would make a lot more sense for me to keep my sugar by the coffee maker, since that’s when I use it the most. Having it mounted on a shelf or something would make it easier to clean the countertop….. and then it hit me. Brad gave me a bunch of cool stuff from IKEA a while back, and there were some magnetic canisters I couldn’t find a use for. A drill, a little modification, and here we go!

Make sure the hole is up.

UPDATE: For use, take it off the fridge:

It would be awkward to tip the whole fridge.
