Older than dirt

June 10, 2008 by Lloyd 15 Comments

It was getting past noon and I still hadn’t taken a shower. And, as everyone knows, the only way to justify going into the afternoon without a shower is to get really, really dirty.

We have a fenced in area out behind the garden shed where we dump leaves every year. We call it our compost pile, but we know that to make compost you have to turn it over, add a little dirt and let some air get into the works. We don’t do any of those things. Once a year we dump a whole bunch of leaves on top of last years’ leaves.

Well, it turns out that if you are patient you don’t have to do any of that other stuff. If you’re willing to wait about a decade the leaves will turn into dirt all on their own.

When we moved into our house (about a decade ago, go figure) we had a home inspector come and look things over and tell us what needed to be done. The previous owners fixed some things and we’ve done a few since then. One of the things he said we should do is add some dirt to the south side of the house so that water would drain away from the house more effectively.

Now I happen to be an expert on water (I’m over 70% water by volume) and I knew that our water was draining fine. But twice a year Lauren brings up the fact that we haven’t added any dirt to the south side of the house. Eventually it’s enough to get to a guy, so, as I needed an excuse not to have showered I put my new dirt on the south side of the house.

Oh, only the bottom of the pile was actually dirty, so I had to tunnel under.

It’s really more of a loam.

Gutter & Chimneys

June 7, 2008 by Lauren 19 Comments

It was a fairly productive day. I got a few things done, and Lloyd – well, Lloyd was on fire today! He cleaned the gutters and figured out how that bird got in our house. I felt the need to tell the story through a movie, as is my way. Enjoy, and happy Sunday.

On fire!

May 31, 2008 by Lauren 15 Comments

I got more work done before noon today than I usually do all weekend. Granted, I stayed in my jammies until 3:30, but that didn’t deter me. Three main things got done:

I hung up a holder for the baritone uke. Now there’s no excuse not to annoy Lloyd on a regular basis.

I ‘cleaned’ the tool bench. It still has a way to go, but it looks a hundred percent better.

better

And last, I liquid starched a piece of an old sheet to the bottom of the kitchen window, and sewed a little thingie for the top. I’m most pleased how the color blends right it. It’s almost like we don’t have a window anymore!
Now those pesky neighbors can’t watch me dance.

For the rest of the weekend, I shall sleep – guilt-free!

Cheap re-do

May 3, 2008 by Lauren 6 Comments

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve actually been whittling away at the kitchen. Every so often I’d scrape a little more paper, and then decided to use up paint from the basement stash. We have so many leftover cans of paint you wouldn’t believe it. There are several cans from the previous owners, and various gallon, quart, pint and spray cans from my projects. It’s nuts.

The first attempt was the yellow from Brad’s room, and it was nice, but it didn’t go with the dining room. So, I used brown paint from the downstairs bathroom for the top part, and tan paint from the upstairs bathroom for the bottom. There: it’s all done and I only spent 4 bucks for new roller covers. To honor the event, I have made a movie! Cricket just loves when there are projects that require the ladder. It’s the ultimate cat toy. (Something went wonky when we uploaded it, so it no longer fits just right with the music. I do not care.)

Does this color look familiar, Brad?

It is finished.

April 26, 2008 by Lauren 11 Comments

Today I actually got a few things done. Paid some bills, got more of the wallpaper off the kitchen walls, sanded off the extra glue from Mrs. Royuk’s crock (more on that some other post), and finally finished the border in the dining room. Remember that this project was started back in February. Of 2007.

Remember?

Here’s the story, told in pictures:

Water or Simple Green? You decide.

redoing the spacing

There was a line on the wall that Lloyd wrote that I messed up – I wrote ‘to be’ instead of ‘for’. Today, after months and months, it is done.

Goodbye, blank space.

Howdy, ‘for’!

The spacing is off now, but I’m just going with it.

For Kristi: The rest of it is after the break. [Read more…] about It is finished.
