Pride & Prejudice & Zombies

February 8, 2016 by Lloyd 7 Comments

Everyone’s second choice for Bad Movie Night was Pride & Prejudice and Zombies.

Don’t tell anyone, but I’m as big a Jane Austin fan as the next guy.  Okay, I’m probably a little bigger Jane Austin fan than the next guy. I think all of us agreed that if you haven’t seen Pride and Prejudice, you shouldn’t see this movie. And if you don’t particularly like Pride and Prejudice, you’d better be (a) a big fan of zombies and (b) fairly open minded about your zombies.

I actually really enjoyed it. It was amazing to me how closely all of the major plot elements of Pride & Prejudice were incorporated. I don’t know if I was more impressed when the dialog was exactly the same or when it was changed cleverly to reflect the, um, new circumstances.

Samith was surprised at how long the movie was. Curt, who had no prior Pride and Prejudice experience, thought it was a very bad movie indeed.

Samuel L. Jackson comes through again

February 25, 2015 by Lloyd 10 Comments

We had another successful Bad Movie Night on Tuesday, and Lauren is finally letting me write about it. We didn’t go into it thinking it would be anything out of the ordinary. Samith investigated the movies this time around and presented us with two choices: Jupiter Rising or Kingsmen.

Samith characterized Jupiter Rising as, “potentially having some love story element involved.” And he characterized Kingsmen as, “Has Samuel L. Jackson ever disappointed us?” Or, in the case of Bad Movie Night, maybe that should be, “Has Samuel L. Jackson ever not disappointed us?” Or maybe, “Has Samuel L. Jackson ever appointed us?”

They* say that good movies are all good in the same way, but bad movies are all bad differently. I think it’s fairly safe to say that Kingsmen was bad in the Oh-Sh*t-We-Ran-Out-Of-Money-And-The-Film-Isn’t-Done sort of way. Which is sort of, but not quite the same as Dusk Til Dawn’s I-Bet-You-Didn’t-Know-This-Was-A-Vampire-Movie sort of way. Oh, and belated spoiler alert for Dusk Til Dawn.

Afterwards we ate a Five Guys and reminisced about other spectacular Bad Movie Night Movies. What are some great bad movies that you’ve seen?

Bad Movie Night table

March 31, 2014 by Lloyd 6 Comments

For the past, I don’t know?  Maybe half dozen years? We’ve been trying to have a Bad Movie Night Table at the annual Lincoln Lutheran Dinner & Auction. For various reasons, which we have never understood, we would always get a table together, but our name would never appear on the table. This year we finally got the recognition that we deserve.

A Good Time was had by all

Speaking of deserving recognition, he’ll hate me for mentioning it, but Samith paid for all of the seats at the table this year. He asked that we spend the money that we would have spent on the seats on other things at the auction instead. I don’t have an official number or anything, but I believe our table spent at least $3500. So nice job, Samith, and nice job rest of the bad movie night table as well.

Freeze! Put your hands on your head!

Next year we’re going to have two bad movie night tables. Make your reservations now!

Seems like old times

March 11, 2014 by Lloyd 7 Comments

What if we held a Bad Movie Night and no one came? It was Bad Movie Night yesterday and it was just Samith and I. Usually we have from 4 to 12 people. Okay, usually we have 4-6 people, but we occasionally break double digits. Yesterday it was like the very first Bad Movie Nights a dozen or so years ago when it was just Samith and I all the time.

We were both 15 minutes late and that meant we were walking into the theater just when Robocop was starting. It was actually a surprisingly good movie. There were about 4 parts that I really hated, but apart from that it was entertaining. It was also surprisingly long –nearly 2 hours long.

After the movie we decided to eat someplace we hadn’t eaten before. They’ve opened up about a hundred new restaurants in the Haymarket. We went to the first one that we saw that we hadn’t been to before. That turned out to be the Rodizio Grill. It was good, but there were only two things on the menu. You could have the salad bar.

Lots of odd dishes

That was about a third of the salad bar. It could easily be a meal. I wish it had a quarter for scale. Those are actually fairly large serving spoons. Oh, wait. Here is a Samith for scale…

That's Samith

You could also order the salad bar and meat. They had a little sign type thing on the table and if you had it turned one way they would bring you a new meat to try every few (2-3) minutes.  When you were ready to take a break from the meat (to get more salad or whatever) you would turn the sign over. We probably started and stopped a half dozen times or more during the course of the meal.

Each serving of meat was only a few bites and there were easily over a dozen different ones to try. My favorite was the ham, followed closely by the grilled pineapple (which I’m given to understand is not actually a meat). They had beef, pork, lamb and chicken each prepared 3-4 different ways. There were probably more. The last time we turned our sign over they brought something by that we hadn’t seen before.

Grill direct from Brazil

For those of you not in Nebraska, I would also like to point out that it snowed while we were there. It was 70 degrees out yesterday.

Bad Movie Night. Fail!

November 3, 2009 by Lloyd 9 Comments

Well, it happens every once in a while. You get a few of guys together to go see a Bad MovieTM, and instead you see a really well done movie.

I mean, how could we go right with a movie called ZombieLand? Doesn’t that just scream bad movie? Well, it was all around well done. The acting, the dialog, the zombies, they were all top notch. There was even a really funny extended cameo in the middle of the flick.

Three out of five actors in this movie have won academy awards. This clown is not one of them.

If you only see one zombie movie this year, this is the one you want. Oh, and stay until the end of the credits too.

Max Payne

November 4, 2008 by Lloyd 10 Comments

Lauren wasn’t feeling very well yesterday. I picked her up after school and we went to vote, then we got some drugs for Cricket, some Subway for us and went home. She went to bed early, and I watched the networks project winners with 3% of the vote in. But that’s not what I wanted to post about.

Peggy asked what movie we went to see for Bad Movie Night®. We decided that we couldn’t really go wrong with a movie based on a video game, so we went to see Max Payne. It was really bad, and I couldn’t possibly recommend it. But we had a lot of fun making fun of it.

This one goes to 11.

What I don’t really enjoy so much anymore is our local theatre. Ever since Marcus Theatres bought Douglas Theatres, the movie experience has been going downhill. There were two things this time that really ticked me off. First of all, they had grape Icees instead of cola Icees. Why would you do something like that? To put it in my own words, when the concession stand worker said, “We only have grape and cherry.” I could only respond, “Why bother?”

We’ve learned in the last 6 months that we no longer have to try to get to the movie on time, but last week was ridiculous. The Max Payne was scheduled to begin at 5:00. The last commercial and preview was finished at 5:26. Ouch.

Oh, and Ron Paul isn’t our next president. Ouch Ouch.
