cold

Chili in bed

January 30, 2015 by Lloyd 4 Comments

I’ve had a head cold since Sunday. Lauren has been nursing me back to health by leaving me alone. I stayed home from school on Monday thinking that I would do that at the start of being sick and see if that got me well sooner. I felt better on Tuesday, so I went to school. Then I felt worse on Wednesday, so I went to school anyway just to throw the cold for a loop. I’m feeling a lot better now.

My voice was really shot on Wednesday, so I hooked a lapel mic up to the speakers in my classroom and I didn’t have to make hardly any sound at all. But it was kind of annoying when I coughed.

Anyway, that’s not what I wanted to tell you about. On Tuesday, after I got home from school I took some medicine and went to bed. When Lauren got home she yelled at me because I was suppose to take the medicine with food. Then she brought me chili in bed.

She’s a keeper.

Prepare to be underwhelmed.

November 30, 2010 by Lauren 24 Comments

It’s incredibly cold here now, and it reminded me that last winter I started a movie and never finished it. It has sat on my computer until tonight, when I drew up the last cartoons for it and just got it over with. “Good enough for who it’s for” and all that.

In reality, I had to just get it out there because it’s irrelevant now. It’s a gripping documentary about how cold I keep our house in winter, except now that the new windows are in, I am allowing degrees and degrees more heat to be BTU’d around here. (Like – two of them!) Also, now you know about the nose warmer.

Here is a list of things that are wrong with this movie:
1. It does not star Julia Roberts and Adrian Grenier, who are our preferred stand-ins.
2. Lloyd doesn’t like how he’s singing.
3. I don’t like how I’m singing.
4. I think Lloyd doesn’t like how I’m singing.
5. The drawings are terrible.
6. There are no transitions and the timing is off.
7. I have some typos because I forgot how the song went.
8. There is a LOT of white-out on those drawings, but not enough.

All that being said, here it is: Baby, It’s Cold Inside.

Old Heat

March 16, 2008 by Lauren 33 Comments

Well, we survived not having a furnace for two days. It’s really not a hardship since the temperatures are in the 40’s or so, and yesterday was so sunny. Today was cloudy, though, so we didn’t get the solar gain. (I love this! It’s like all my pioneer dreams are coming true! The heat’s out and we have to make do! The only thing better would be to lose electricity. Then it would be just like Laura Ingalls.) I haven’t broken out all the candle heaters yet, but there’s always tomorrow.

Lloyd had choir in Lincoln this afternoon, so I seriously looked into getting one of those electric fireplaces that is also a space heater. They are still around a hundred bucks, however, and I knew I would regret it after the initial rapture of beholding it. Instead, I knew we could borrow a space heater from the Center. It’s an oldie but a goody. ‘Oldie’ meaning that this is the kind that – left unattended – sets garages on fire and such because it cranks out such serious heat. We will not be using it overnight, thank you very much. We’ll use our little safe ‘equipped-with-tip-over-switch’ guy for upstairs.
Its energy comes from the sun.

Homemade Slanket

November 24, 2007 by Lauren 9 Comments

A while back I came across the wesite of the Slanket, an ingenious combination of a blanket with sleeves – perfect for keeping warm while lounging about, yet still keeping your arms free for reading or changing channels. I loved the idea so very, very much, but was unwilling to shell out the money for one. So, I decided to try to make my own out of cheap Wal-Mart throws. Turns out, I would really recommend buying one from the website, since the one I made looks like a blind person did it. The seams are all crooked and inside-out, and there are a bunch of tiny threads all over the material from when I had to rip a whole seam out, and the the little throws I bought to make them didn’t have enough fabric for the project. Ah, as the old saying goes, “God is in the details…. and Lauren’s making crap again.”

It is warm, though!

Turns out it takes two to make one.

UPDATE: “Instructions!”

It’s fleece. It’s forgiving.
