Not quite the worst day ever

'Bye, ugly grapes

Change is a’comin’ again!  After ten years,  I am committed to getting the stupid grape border off the dining room walls.  (It came with the house.)  I tore off a little strip last week, and yesterday worked on soaking off the glue.  Guess what happenes when you let glue disolver sit too long on a painted plaster walls  Yeah, the paint comes off.  Grrrrr…

In other news, Lloyd and I went around the house and made a list of things that really need to be repaired around here – the humidifier on the furnace, call the basement people to see about our foundation, the peeling paint around the windows, the constantly leaky toilet, the banister railing needs fixing, and our washing machine that was just repaired two weeks ago is leaking again.  We worked for about an hour, then I had a glass of wine and a two hour nap.  That’s how things get done, right?

Gettin’ old.

February 17, 2007 by Lauren 9 Comments

Yesterday Lloyd called to ask if I’d like to go to a spontaneous birthday party that one of his co-workers was having for herself. “Sounds fun!”  I replied!  So, we all met at Red Robin, and it turned out to be us and several of her friends from around Lincoln.  It was very interesting, since all of them had jobs that WEREN’T teaching.  I can’t remember the last time I’ve been with a group like that.  One worked at a company that produced newsletters for other companies, one was a pastor, one was a nursing student, one worked at UNL (but not as a teacher!), one guy was in charge of all the computers for some call-processing place, and one was a grad student.  I thoroughly enjoyed the evening…..until I realized I was the oldest one there.  That’s going to start happening alot, now, huh?

singin'

“Happy Birthday, Customer,  We hope you liked the food, We sing this made-up birthday song just so we don’t get sued.  Stupid Michael Jackson, or was it Paul McCartney? He bought the rights to the real song and ruined all our parties.”

Happy Belated, Cricket.

February 15, 2007 by Lauren 18 Comments

Aside from forgetting that February 14th was Samith’s birthday, we also forgot it was Cricket’s. (She’s 13 now.)  When she was a baby and we took her to the vet, he estimated her age and said, “She’s a Valentine cat.”  When we got Pfennig a year later and took her in, he said, “She was probably born on April 1st.”  I thought, “Wow!  What are the odds that both our cats have holiday birthdays?!”  About two weeks later I thought, “Wait a minute.”  EVERY month has a holiday, Lauren.  You idiot.

Anyway, a few days ago I saw a video of Nora, the Piano Playing Cat on You Tube.  It reminded me that when we first got our piano, Cricket would play it like she was Mozart!  (Actually, she would attack the keyboard like a mouse was trapped under it.) But not anymore. Now she just sits on my lap the few times I play. (I think she likes how the notes feel.)

Ith that a camera??

The Day After

February 14, 2007 by Lauren 10 Comments

Actually, I’m writing this the evening of.  Valentine’s Day itself went rather smoothly – cards were passed out without a hitch, activities played, snacks consumed.  The afternoon was a bit hectic, and I pray for their parents tonight, but as for me and my house – Lloyd is napping on the couch and I am snug and warm with a belly full of chili – and have also sampled all the chocolates in the house. (No good ones – am I cursed or something?)

Only fruity things and coconuts. Not a carmel in the bunch. Blech.

Happy Heart Day

February 13, 2007 by Lauren 8 Comments

After grumbling about getting things ready for Valentine’s Day, Annette asked me, “Is there a holiday you don’t hate?”  The answer is….I don’t know.  I like St. Patrick’s Day because I stamp tiny footprints all over school and fib to the children.  “Yeah, must have been that leprechaun.”

Back to Valentine’s Day.  It’s not that I hate the actual day, but children become different creatures around the holidays.  This day is the closest we come to having a ‘party’, so it will be a long day.  On tap:  making bead necklaces, making heart crowns, ‘Jesus Loves Me’ tattoos, a ladybug craft, passing out Valentines, and snack.  The passing out the Valentines is the big deal of the day, and it takes most of the morning for 24 preschoolers to accomplish that task, then we reward them by loading up on cupcakes!!  Woo-hooo!!

This is the stuff that I’m taking from home.  What have I forgotten?

I know!  I forgot to wish Samith a Happy Birthday!!!

A box of love

Hepped up on Goofballs

February 12, 2007 by Lauren 5 Comments

MAN do I have the munchies.

Occasionally we give our old, creaky cats some catnip just so we can watch them get high and beat the Meow Mix out of each other.  There’s no greater entertainment.  These photos are pre-attack, when they haven’t quite realized that they’re actually occupying the same rug.

Even better view
