Past my Prime

January 7, 2007 by Lloyd 4 Comments

As this sieve of Eratosthenes shows, given my expected life span of 74.7 years, I am now, clearly, past my prime. I am currently prime (37) and have had 11 good, prime years of life previous to this one. In order to have 11 more prime years I will need to live to be 83 years old. As any hip actuary could tell you, that is statisticalishously unlikely.

Dancing Queen

January 1, 2007 by Lloyd 2 Comments

Bethany can dance… Charles and Deborah stopped by over Christmas break, and, every once in a while, while we were listening to some tunes and generally making fun of Brad, a song would play that Bethany found particularly compelling and she would turn into a dancing machine. As you might have heard, Lauren got a new camera for Christmas, so we actually have evidence. Note Macy obliviously playing in the foreground (she’s obviously seen this sort of thing before) and Phennig watching in the background (she’s obviously not seen this sort of thing before).

john + the internet = awesome

December 23, 2006 by Lloyd 5 Comments

Watch as I harness the power of the interweb to bring about my master plan. Even now, as I sit here in the heart of my evil, if slightly chilly, lair typing this message, my evil plan is coming together. You see, once Brad got a website and Lauren got a website, I realized that anyone could have a website. Then (this actually took a while, but for narrative purposes lets say it it pretty much happened next) I thought, what if all the people who I always wonder what they are up to, but never talk to, had websites?

I have a picture with Sam in it somewhere too.

Normally, that sort of idle wondering would have been enough for me, and I would have gone back to reading a book or something. But not this time. No, not this time. This time I have set forth a chain of events mighty to behold and… um… now I sort of need some help. See, John and Cheri have a website: www.schmidly.com, and as we know, the fun bit about having a website is having other people post comments about the things on your website. So, for a limited time only, everyone who posts a comment on their site can be one of my evil minions.

Evil minions don’t have health benefits yet, but we are starting a 401k program at the start of the year. Ah yes, soon my plan will be complete.

No ice… update…

December 20, 2006 by Lloyd 4 Comments

Well, no ice after all. Our Christmas party went well, and the kids were good. They seemed to like the movie and told me that I look like Joseph. When Jesus was born they clapped (which was cute) and then about 2 minutes later they just clapped to see if they could get everyone to clap (which was annoying). Another teacher complemented me on my worksheet (which was nice). I think it’s the best worksheet I’ve ever made; the discussion questions at the end aren’t all mine.

Are we there yet?

Birthday trivia

December 19, 2006 by Lloyd 11 Comments

I bet most of you don’t know (I feel pretty confident saying this, because I didn’t know until a few days ago) that I haven’t thrown away a belt in the last 20 years. Some of you have met my mom, and so that information probably doesn’t come as any real surprise. Be that as it may, it does allow me to present this dress belt retrospective…
let us refrain from the obvious, shall we?
As you can see, I’ve gone from a black belt to browns, and from solid to weaves. The black belt probably happened when I got a new suit for confirmation. The next belt came when Lauren and I moved back to Seward. Samith took me shopping for a new suit (my own judgment in these matters being suspect) and along with the suit came a pair of shoes, a few shirts, a couple of ties and a belt. The last belt has come about, not in response to a change in wardrobe, but because my former belt was slowly shrinking. As most of you are aware, leather will shrink with age, and so when the last belt hole reached an untenable position, I had to retire it. Happy Birthday to me.

Happy Birthday Mrs. Royuk

December 18, 2006 by Lloyd 3 Comments

Brad, Beth and Brent’s mom is the middle of the birthday sandwich. In years past (before we were aware of this fact) December 18 was reserved for Lauren ordering me around all day. “I’m your elder now and you have to do what I say.” Now things are much better. A year or so ago I put together some photos from the Royuks many travel adventures. Here’s one:
