Do NOT try this at home

November 30, 2006 by Lauren 9 Comments

If there’s something I love, it’s being irresponsible and unsafe in my own home. You’d never think it – I’m always on everyone else’s case to be careful, and think they can’t do anything right on their own.

*** Disclaimer *** That being said, don’t try these things at home. There is no way that you could ever do this without burning your house down. In fact, it’ll be a miracle if we don’t burn our own house down.

Now, on to the unsafe experiments!!! As you may know, I’m becoming freakish about cheap heat. The candle heater is pretty cool, but doesn’t get as hot as my unsafe model. Thinking along the lines of a true cheapskate, I wondered if you could just put tea lights in a cinder block and skip all the costly bolts and nuts. Having a plethora of cinder blocks in the basement, I give you:
Model One

Don't go having any earthquakes or anything

It gets pretty hot on top! It hit 165, which is plenty warm for putting your stocking feet on. The bottom stays cool, so the floor is safe. If I were going to do this on a regular basis, I’d probably make some kind of rig so the tealights couldn’t accidently get kicked out. (Which is unlikely, but possible.)

Testing the boundaries even further, we have the mini model:

Model Two

Mini Me

Toasty Tootsies

As we are still in testing mode, this picture was taken fifteen minutes after lighting the candles, and Lloyd said it was plenty hot – 137 degrees. I’ve taken out one tealight, leaving three. Ain’t dangerous experiments grand??

(Update: one hour later, it’s at 178.)

(Updated update: two hours later, and Mini Me is a bit warm on the bottom, too – 167. I’ve put a washcloth underneath, and we’ve had one on top for a while now as a buffer. The top is ROCKET HOT – 232. Tomorrow I’m trying again with just two tealights.)

(Updated updated update:  Um, some pretty bad creosote will build up on the one that is so close to the flames.  It will make a bad burny smell and might burn your house down before you know it.  Skip the tiny one, eh?)

Deck the halls

November 29, 2006 by Lauren 5 Comments

I finally got our decorations up!  Hope Lloyd likes it, but he’ll probably want to mess with it until it’s just right – he’s so dang jolly!  God bless us, every one.

On the road again….

November 26, 2006 by Lauren 2 Comments

It’s about 9 a.m. (Mountain Time) and we’re getting ready to leave our  BEAUTIFUL hotel room in Denver.  On the way to Colorado, we Pricelined a room for $50 and got a crummy ‘suite’ that was just a little creepy.  It had a kitchenette, but no soap for the dishes, so I just trusted that the dishes were clean and God would keep us safe as we ate our soup.

But, THIS place can be had by bidding a mere $40!  For some reason, we’ve been here several times, and it’s great.  A beautiful kitchen with Corian countertops and a dishwasher, gorgeous linens, free internet connection – it makes me weep with joy.  Check out their website! http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/DENTK

We had a great time with my parents – lots of delicious food, good company, and we even helped hang Christmas lights and put up the tree.  Their neighbors have a crazy huge display that takes up their whole yard and draws visitors from miles around, so that was fun to see, too.

It’s too bad we didn’t have a camera, because there were many great things to see.  You’ll just have to wait until we get home and I will draw it in stick figures.  Thanks for keeping this going, guys!

Prototype

November 20, 2006 by Lauren 10 Comments

Those of you unfamiliar with my work should know that I only make prototypes: meaning that I’ll have an idea and bring it to 87% completion (just to see it work), then give up.

I found an interesting idea online about a candle heater. (It’s at www.heatstick.com if you’d like to check it out.) I went ahead and ordered one because I thought , “Here’s a guy who had an idea and actually carried it through! That kind of dedication has to be encouraged.” However, it’s going to take several days for mine to arrive, so I made an extremely dangerous prototype.

His candle heater has three flower pots and many more screws and washers, and a well-made stand – not a green bean can with sharp, dangerous gashes on the sides. I played with it all night, using the infrared thermometer to check how hot it was getting. I also gave myself a royal burn after touching the bolt. I knew it was hot, and was being very, very careful, then some demon possessed my mind and said, “Touch it. Touch it now.” Then I did. Stupid.

jagged edges and hot surfaces - my kind of fun!

blurry, or moving very fast?

Don’t adjust your screen, the picture’s just blurry.

Slow News Day

November 17, 2006 by Lauren 3 Comments

Well, the news isn’t slow, but the photo is what it is.   The Thanksgiving Breakfast Buffet was a big hit at school, Lloyd is at his Fun Night with the middle school children.  (He co-ordinates an evening of games & dancing.  I won’t go into it because he’ll probably want to write about it later.)  It’s 9:40 and he won’t be home for at least another hour.

I’ve been sitting around the house, occasionally cleaning up, and trying not to fall asleep out of supportive guilt for Lloyd.  Here’s a picture of my lap.  The shoes are my expensive, but foot-saving Josef Siebels, which I pray look better when I stand up than they do in this picture.  The uke is staged, but the harmonica isn’t.

(Who are we kidding?  It’s staged, too.)

The Bat Man

November 14, 2006 by Lauren 7 Comments

While getting ready for bed, I heard a *scrabble scrabble* from the vent to the attic fan in the hall.  It’s the first bat of the season!  I went to tell Lloyd (who – as you’ll read about in the lower post – was comfortably in bed after drowning his sorrows from the worst day ever).  He rose to the challenge, though.  Whistling the theme from ‘The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly’ and wearing a fleece poncho we’ve been using as a blanket, he went to catch that bat.  It involves propping the vent open with a broom, waiting until the bat comes out, then catching it with a sheet to release it into the wild.  My job is to hide behind a door – this time with a camera.

Exhibit A

No pants, but he has a bat.

The poncho fell off in the scuffle.

I’m glad he caught that bat.  It surely would have eaten us in the night.
