Look, a new website

April 18, 2013 by Lloyd 10 Comments

Lauren has been really busy lately, so I asked her if she wanted me to write a post. She said, “Always.” Which I thought was a little over the top, but in the spirit of the thing I said, “Okay.”

Then I realized that I didn’t really have anything to say. So I will, instead, attempt to get you to paint my fence. I’ve been working on a new website for a while and although it’s live and seems to be doing alright, I really haven’t gotten any feedback on it from anyone.

If you have time, go take a look and tell me if anything doesn’t look right. You don’t have to fill out forms or anything. I’m reasonably sure that everything actually works. I just don’t know how it looks. It’s like they say about selling your home. You want to have someone who doesn’t live in the home come and point out all of the little things that need to be done that you don’t see any more, because you’ve been looking at them for 10 year and besides, you were always going to get around to fixing it anyway.

Order Up!

June 22, 2011 by Lloyd 3 Comments

Well, the book I “wrote” for my dad didn’t get here before Father’s Day, but it really turned out nice. This will sound stupid, but it looks just like a real book. It even has a bar-code on the back.

So, if you were waiting to see the final product before turning your blog website into a book, I would say that it’s easy enough, and turns out okay too. It’s not perfect. The automatic software isn’t the best at laying out pages, so there are some pages that are nearly empty, but there are not many of those. Things that I would do differently…

  • Take more time on the dust jacket. I should have put a title on the cover as well as the spine.
  • Better proof reading. I have two spelling mistakes on the inside front cover of the dust jacket. The only thing that everyone is sure to read.
  • The Sommerer Family Website has a fair number of posts about how to use the website. I can’t imagine that those are going to be interesting in book form.

Now I have to decide whether to mail it to him or keep it until the family reunion that starts on the 1st of July. Oh, and you’re all invited to attend.

A little help?

October 28, 2010 by Lloyd 8 Comments

Some of you might remember that I was working on a new website for Lincoln Lutheran for, um, about the last three years. If you could spare 30 seconds (surely you’re used to wasting that much time here anyway), I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind taking a quick test/survey/something about the new website: click here (Really. 30 seconds, tops)

After you’re done you can see what everyone else said. But no fair peeking first.

What-a-ma-huh?

October 15, 2009 by Lloyd 7 Comments

Did anyone notice that for a few hours yesterday we relented in our usual time wasting activities and decided to try our hands at internet dating?

Both domain names had expired, and, after we woke up and noticed that the website was gone, it took a little while for all of the name servers to get the message. I wish that we would get an email notice ahead of time, but I haven’t been able to figure out the right combination of setting to get my domain name registrar to send me an email before the, “Surprise! Your website is gone!” email.

It's a much cleaner look than the current site.

Before I finally had the domain name renewed, I had twenty-seven “Offers of marriage.“

Painting this fence is fun!

October 3, 2009 by Lloyd 7 Comments

So, I’m working on a new design for the Lincoln Lutheran website. I’m not very far along yet, but I have a wireframe that I’m pretty happy with. I’m not very good with actual design, but I think I’ve covered the things we need on the home page. Now I just have to get someone to make it look nice.

Click on the image to see what the yellow dots do.

The last thing for me to do on the homepage is the main menu, and I’d like to get your opinion on it. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to take these 15 common tasks that someone might do on a school website, and choose the menu option that you think would give you the right information to do them. It will probably take 2-5 minutes depending on how much thought you want to put into it.

I’m using free services to do this, and they only support a limited number of surveys. So you might find that the first link won’t let you take the survey. If that happens, please try the second link instead. But if the first one works, please don’t do the second one. If you accidentally click on the second link first, go ahead and do the second survey, but don’t go back and also complete the first one. If neither of them work, then please complain loudly to the management that you would like to receive your money back.
